Dowdeswell grew up in Rhodesia and attended the Prince Edward School in Harare from 1967 to 1972 . He completed his studies at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1978 with a Bachelor of Commerce . He then moved to Switzerland. In 1974 he won his first double title in Dublin , and the following year he won his only single title. Between 1976 and 1980 he was on the board of the ATP . In 1981 he returned to England, where he won the national tennis championship in 1984, which he had previously achieved in Switzerland and Rhodesia.
Between 1981 and 1983 Dowdeswell had retired from tennis and worked on the London Stock Exchange . On his comeback in 1983 he reached the final in Johannesburg after victories over Kevin Curren and Vitas Gerulaitis , where he lost to Johan Kriek in five sets . Between 1984 and 1990 he was again on the board of the ATP. In the course of his career he won eleven double titles. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1983 with position 31 in singles and 1984 with position 24 in doubles.
In 1986, after winning the eleventh title in the double competition, he finally retired from professional tennis and graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the European Business School Paris. He has been with Merrill Lynch since 1994 , where he has served as First Vice President since 2004 . He is married and has three children.
