Chris Lewis (born March 9, 1957 in Auckland ) is a retired New Zealand tennis player .

Life

In 1975 he was the number 1 junior. He won a total of three singles tournaments and reached 19th place as the highest position on the tennis world rankings . He also won twelve tournaments in doubles in his career.

By reaching the final of the men's singles in 1983 at Wimbledon , Lewis was only the seventh unseeded player, and after Anthony Wilding, the second New Zealand player to do so. In the final he was defeated by John McEnroe in three sets.

Chris Lewis suffered from fear of flying, also due to the fact that he was sitting in three planes that had to make an emergency landing. So he always tried to avoid air travel as much as possible, which was often not possible due to the tournaments spread around the globe and his distant home.
