He won two individual tournaments in his career, the 1992 tournament in Cologne and 1994 the Swedish Open in Båstad . His highest world ranking position was 22nd in 1995. In doubles, he won the tournament in Schenectady with Andrei Olchowski . He belonged to the victorious German Davis Cup team around Michael Stich in 1993 as a substitute. In the following years he was on the field in two Davis Cup games for Germany in singles (match balance 1: 2). In addition, in 1994 Karbacher became the second individual player alongside Michael Stich, together with Patrik Kühnen and Karsten Braasch, team world champion at the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf. Karbacher represented Germany at the Hopman Cup in 1994 with Anke Huber . They reached the final, Karbacher had won all three individual games by then. They lost the final against the Czech Republic with 1: 2, both Huber and Karbacher lost in their singles.
His greatest successes, however, were two quarter-finals in Grand Slam tournaments . So he reached in 1994 after a win against Ivan Lendl at the US Open and at the French Open 1996 after a success against Goran Ivanišević in each case the round of the last eight. He also caused a stir by his participation in the final at the ATP tournament in Indianapolis in 1995, when he defeated Pete Sampras in the semifinals .
In 2000 he ended his career as a professional tennis player. Since 2007 he has been President of the German player organization Tennis Germany .
