Anke Huber (born December 4, 1974 in Bruchsal ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

She achieved her first major title at the age of 11. In 1986 she became German youth champion and was able to defend the title in the following two years. In 1989 she won the Junior Fed Cup with Maja Zivec-Skulj and Katharina Düll . They won the final against Czechoslovakia 2-1, in which Klara Matouskova, Karina Habšudová and Petra Kučová played. Huber made her professional debut in Bayonne in 1989 (7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 2 against Sabrina Goleš ). During her active time she was mostly in the shadow of her more successful competitor Steffi Graf .

Together with Graf, Barbara Rittner and Sabine Hack , she won the Federation Cup in 1992 . In the final against Spain, she defeated the then top ten player Conchita Martínez and thus laid the foundation for the team's success.

Outstanding in her career was the legendary match against Steffi Graf in the Masters final in 1995, in which she lost to her opponent in five sets. Many observers described the match as the best of their professional career. In the same year she won the Hopman Cup for Germany on the side of Boris Becker against the Ukrainian pairing Natalija Medwedjewa and Andrij Medwedjew .

Another highlight was reaching fourth place in the WTA world rankings in October 1996. At the Australian Open 1996 she reached her only Grand Slam final, which she lost to world number one Monica Seles .

After several injuries , Huber resigned on October 21, 2001. She played her last match on October 31, 2001 at the WTA Championships in Munich , when she lost to Justine Henin from Belgium 1: 6, 2: 6 in the round of 16 . Her overall balance at 243 tournament starts: she played 632 matches, of which she won 418. Her career prize pool is $ 4,768,292.

In spring 2005 Huber gave birth to their first child. The boy's father is her long-term partner Roger Wittmann , a brother-in-law of the football player Mario Basler . She became a mother for the second time on October 2, 2006, and gave birth to a girl by caesarean section. Anke Huber lives with her family in Frankenthal (Palatinate) .
