Eight national teams competed in the Hopman Cup , a competition of nations in tennis with a focus on mixed games. A men's and a women's singles as well as a mixed were played. The event was named after the Australian tennis player Harry Hopman , who played mixed alongside his wife Nell . The organizer of this pure invitation tournament is the ITF .
The Hopman Cup was on an equal footing with the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup . It was discontinued after the 2019 event and replaced by the ATP Cup in the men's tournament calendar.
history
The idea for the event was first discussed in 1984. However, it was not until 1988 that the competition actually took place. Since then, it has been held every year shortly before or after the turn of the year in Perth , Australia .
The competition mode has changed several times over the years. The number of participating nations changed between eight (in the first edition in 1988/89) and twelve (second to seventh edition), with the eighth edition of the Hopman Cup, eight participating nations returned. The order of the matches changed after two years from women singles, mixed, men singles to women singles, men singles, mixed , in order to give the mixed game a more attractive and sometimes decisive role. Since the eighth event, the knockout system that is customary in tennis tournaments has not been used, but a round robin system with two groups of four participants each has been introduced, which was especially helpful for the spectators. The qualification mode for the tournament as well as the number of seeded nations and their placement in the seeding list have also been changed several times.
The record winners are the USA, which has won the tournament six times (most recently in 2011). The USA and Switzerland are the only nations that were able to successfully defend the title. Roger Federer is the only player to win the tournament three times (2001, 2018 and 2019).
The first victory of a German couple came in 1993 when Steffi Graf and Michael Stich won the title against the Spanish team, Graf playing in the final despite an ankle injury. She was a player and advertising medium when the Hopman Cup was held for the first time, although she rarely played mixed games. Two years later, Boris Becker and Anke Huber were also successful with a hard-fought victory over the Ukrainian pair.
For the spectators, the tournament is particularly interesting because the two best-placed players (women and men) in a country often compete and then even stand together on the field in mixed. At the Hopman Cup, for example, you had the opportunity to see the rather rare Becker / Graf combination on the pitch. In 2019, Serena Williams and Roger Federer , considered by many to be the greatest of their guild, met for the first time in an official match .
The tournament was held in the Burswood Dome until 2012 , and in 2013 it was held in the Perth Arena . In 2016, Australia was the first country to take part with two teams, so only six other countries were invited. From 2017, the mixed doubles were played in Fast4 tennis .
The 2020 edition was not held in favor of the ATP Cup, which was newly added to the tournament schedule . The Hopman Cup is to be played again in 2021.
