The Perth Arena (currently sponsored by the RAC Arena ) is a multi-purpose hall with a closable roof in the center of the Australian city ​​of Perth in the state of Western Australia . It was officially opened on November 10, 2012. It is located on Wellington Street , near the former Perth Entertainment Center . The neo-futuristic building is the first construction of the Perth City Link , an urban renewal and redevelopment project that will lower the Fremantle railway line to directly connect the city's financial district with the suburb of Northbridge . The Perth Arena is owned by VenuesWest and operated by AEG Ogden . In the arena, u. a. Sports events as well as concerts and shows take place.

planning

The arena was designed by architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Cameron Chisholm Nicol. The futuristic design is based on the eternity puzzle .

Furnishing

The arena can hold up to 13,910 spectators for tennis events, 14,846 for basketball games and a maximum of 15,000 for concerts. The arena also has 36 luxuriously equipped company suites, an underground car park with 680 spaces, and five event rooms. Trucks can drive directly into the hall.

construction

The tender for the project was won by the Western Australian construction consortium BGC , and work on the site began in June 2007. Construction was overshadowed by controversy over costs and construction time. The cost increased from originally 150 million to nearly 550 million  AUD .

Surname

For the first six years of operation, the Perth Arena retained its non-commercial name. In September 2018 the name was changed to RAC Arena . The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC) became a name sponsor for the next five years. The financial size is estimated at approximately A $ 10 million for the state. Before the name change, the Western Australian government had paid around eight million AUD to the stadium operator AEG Ogden as compensation because it had not found a name sponsor.

Events

Concerts and shows

The arena is a much used place for concerts. There are also stand-up comedy shows (e.g. the ventriloquist Jeff Dunham ) or performances by Cirque du Soleil .

basketball

The Perth Arena is the home ground of the Perth Wildcats basketball team . The first game of the National Basketball League in the new arena took place on November 16, 2012, when the Perth Wildcats played in front of 11,562 spectators against the Adelaide 36ers and lost. With a capacity of 14,846, the Perth Arena is the second largest venue currently in use in the NBL (2018/19) after the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney  (18,200).

tennis

From 2013 to 2019 the unofficial mixed world championship in tennis, the Hopman Cup , took place over the turn of the year . On January 2, 2019, 14,064 spectators attended the game between the United States ( Serena Williams / Frances Tiafoe ) and Switzerland ( Belinda Bencic / Roger Federer ). From 2020 the Hopman Cup will be replaced by the ATP Cup . The first edition is scheduled to take place from January 3 to 12, 2020. In addition to Perth, Brisbane and Sydney will host the new tournament.

Netball

The netball team West Coast Fever from the NNL has been based in the hall since 2013. On April 27, 2013, the first game of the ANZ Championship (today Suncorp Super Netball ) was played in the Perth Arena. The first international netball game in the arena took place on October 30, 2015 between Australia and New Zealand as part of the Constellation Cup .
