The ATP Cup is a competition for national teams in men's tennis. It has been held at the start of the season since the 2020 ATP Tour . The organizer is the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The ATP Cup replaces the Hopman Cup in the calendar and is conceptually comparable to the Davis Cup . It is also considered the unofficial successor to the World Team Cup , which was played in Düsseldorf from 1978 to 2012 and was initially announced under this name before it was renamed the ATP Cup.

mode

The ATP Cup will be played on outdoor hard courts at the venues of Brisbane , Perth and Sydney . A total of 24 nations, divided into six groups of 4 teams each, take part in it. The teams qualify via the ATP world rankings , based on the best-placed player in a nation. To be eligible for the tournament as a nation, it must have at least three players in the world rankings, two of them with a placement in the individual. If the host does not qualify, he will automatically receive a wildcard .

In the group stage, the teams compete against each other twice in singles and once in doubles. The clashes follow a fixed sequence: First, the second best individual players from each team meet, then the best individual players. Finally, even if one team is already in the lead, a double. The six group winners and the two best runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals. With this the knockout phase is heralded. In this, a winner will be played out in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals according to the group phase scheme.

In contrast to the competing events Davis Cup and Laver Cup , points for the world rankings are paid out at the ATP Cup. Depending on the world ranking position of the opponent, an undefeated single player can get up to 750 points for the tournament. Double players receive points for each victory regardless of the ranking and can achieve a maximum of 250 points.

reception

Even in the run-up to the first event in 2020, there was a lot of criticism of the ATP Cup due to the complicated game mode, the allocation of points in general and the question of whether the tennis season needs three team events. During the first discharge there were positive as well as negative reactions, although it was also considered to introduce a women's variant. However, the prioritization of the ATP Cup 2020 in Brisbane, where the simultaneously held, heavily occupied women's tournament was relegated to the secondary places, caused criticism .
