Dōgo Onsen is a district of Matsuyama , Ehime Prefecture , on Shikoku Island in Japan . Thanks to the hot springs , Japan's oldest thermal baths are said to have been built here 3,000 years ago.

history

The main building of Dōgo Onsen is the historic bath house Dōgo-Onsen Honkan, as a monument it is one of the most important cultural assets of Japan . Dōgo Onsen has been recognized by the prefecture as a regional brand since 2007 . Dōgo Onsen is one of the oldest beach resorts in Japan , along with Arima Onsen and Shirahama Onsen . In the Japanese anthology of poems Man'yōshū (Japanese 萬 葉 集) the place is dated back to the mythological age of the gods. The building is a three-story wooden structure that is freely accessible to the public. Around 800,000 guests visit the pool each year. The bathroom has been closed in places since January 2019 as renovation work will be carried out on various facilities over the next seven years.

The spring water is said to have positive effects on the body and health. The water should u. a. have a positive effect on arthritis and care for the skin.
