history

The village, first mentioned in writing in 1654, had 4790 inhabitants in 1890. In 1897, 1307 Jews lived in the village and made up 21 percent of the total population. By 1926, due to a pogrom by the militias under Symon Petljura and the ensuing emigration , the Jewish population had dropped to 924 and 15.3 percent of the total population.

On July 20, 1941, German and Romanian armed forces occupied the place and shortly afterwards Romanian gendarmes carried out a massacre of around 400 local Jews. On September 1, 1941, Shabokrych became part of the Romanian zone of occupation of Transnistria . In autumn / at the beginning of winter 1941, 245 Jews deported from northern Bukovina and Bessarabia came to the village, who settled in the empty houses of the murdered Jews. The conditions in the now established ghetto were dire, but partisans prevented the planned murder of the surviving ghetto inmates in March 1944. In the middle of the same month the village was liberated by the Red Army .
