Career

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Berdych surprisingly won against top seeded Roger Federer in the second round , but was eliminated later. He celebrated his first major success in 2005 at the indoor tournament in Paris , when he defeated Ivan Ljubičić in five sets in the final . 2006 Berdych reached at the French Open , the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open each the last sixteen and the final of the tournament in Halle .

In 2007 he reached the round of 16 of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of Monte Carlo . At the French Open he failed in the first round to Guillermo García-López . On June 17, he won the Halle lawn tournament , in the final he beat Marcos Baghdatis 7: 5, 6: 4. In Wimbledon reached the quarter-finals Berdych, subject to there but Rafael Nadal with 6: 7 1 , 4: 6, 2:. 6 In 2008 he was in the round of 16 of the Australian Open and lost to Roger Federer 4: 6, 6: 7, 6 , 3: 6. In the semi-finals of the tournament in Miami , a tournament of the Masters Series , he was defeated by Nadal 6: 7 6 , 2: 6. He also reached the final in Båstad (4-6, 1-6 loss to Tommy Robredo ) and later in the season in Bangkok the semifinals (5-7, 1-6 against Novak Đoković ). The highlight of the season for him in 2008 was undoubtedly the tournament victory in Tokyo , when he defeated the newcomer of the year, Juan Martín del Potro , 6: 1, 6: 4 and celebrated his fourth title on the ATP World Tour . On the way to the final he eliminated the top players Tommy Robredo, Fernando González and Andy Roddick . Berdych defeated Robby Ginepri , Brian Dabul and the better seeded Stanislas Wawrinka at the Australian Open in 2009 . In his round of 16, he drew the short straw despite a 2-0 set lead against later finalist Federer.

Berdych retaliated in 2010 in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon , where he defeated Federer in four sets. So he moved into the semifinals, where he defeated Đoković smoothly in three sets. In the first Grand Slam final of his career, he then lost to Nadal in three sets.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , Berdych started in singles and doubles for the Czech Republic. In the individual, he was eliminated in the opening round against the Belgian Steve Darcis . In doubles he and Radek Štěpánek survived the first round against the Italians Daniele Bracciali and Andreas Seppi in three sets, before they were narrowly defeated by the Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares 6: 1, 4: 6 and 22:24 in the second round . At the US Open Berdych achieved his season highlight with a win in four sets over Roger Federer. In the semifinals he was defeated by Andy Murray .

In 2013 he reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open , where he was defeated by Novak Đoković in four sets. He was also in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon , where he was eliminated by Đoković. The 2013 season was the most successful of his career in Masters tournaments, he was at least in the quarterfinals of six tournaments and he reached the semifinals in another four, namely in Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome and Cincinnati. At the end of the season he won the Davis Cup for the second time in a row , in the final he prevailed with the Czech Republic against Serbia in Belgrade with 3-2. Berdych himself was able to win a single and a double. This season he remained without a tournament win and ended the year in seventh place in the world rankings. The year 2014 was successful for Berdych at the Grand Slam tournaments, at the Australian Open he made it to the semi-finals, where he lost to Stan Wawrinka in four sets. At the French Open and the US Open Berdych reached the quarterfinals. At the Miami Masters and Paris Masters he was able to reach the semifinals. In the Davis Cup this time he and his team were eliminated in the semi-finals against France with 1: 4. This season he reached five finals, of which he was able to win two. Berdych won the tournaments in Rotterdam and Stockholm , and in the world rankings he again finished the year in seventh place.

In 2015 he was again in the semifinals of the Australian Open , which he lost in four sets to Andy Murray. In all other Grand Slam tournaments, he was eliminated in the round of 16. At the Masters tournaments, however, he was very successful, in nine tournaments he reached at least the quarterfinals eight times, only in Montreal he lost his opening game. In Miami and Madrid Berdych reached the semi-finals, in Monte-Carlo he was in his third Masters final, which he lost 5: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6 to Novak Đoković. This season he again won two tournaments, on the one hand he defended his title in Stockholm against Jack Sock , shortly afterwards he also triumphed in Shenzhen after a two-set win against Guillermo García López . At the ATP World Tour Finals , he was eliminated from the group stage for the fourth time in a row. At the end of the season, he finished sixth in the world rankings. The 2016 season was less successful overall, the climax was the semi-finals at Wimbledon , which he lost to Andy Murray. In Melbourne and Paris he was able to reach the quarter-finals. In no Masters tournament did he get past the quarterfinals. Berdych announced in 2016 that he was not going to the Olympics . He cited the health risks associated with the Zika virus as the reason . This made him the second top ten player after Milos Raonic to cancel the tournament in Rio. He announced in August 2016 that the former top player Goran Ivanisević will now be part of his coaching team. He had previously looked after the Croatian Marin Čilić . His only tournament win was defending his title in Shenzhen , beating Richard Gasquet in three sets. He finished the 2016 season in tenth place in the world rankings.

The 2017 season was not very successful for Berdych. Only in Wimbledon did he reach the semifinals again, where he was eliminated in three tight sets against Roger Federer. In the other three Grand Slam tournaments, he did not get past the third round. At the Masters tournaments, he could only reach the quarter-finals in Miami, which he just lost in the tie-break of the third set against Federer. He won no tournament that season and was only in the final in Lyon , where he lost out to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . He finished the season in 19th place for the first time in seven years outside the top ten. 2018 was one of the worst seasons of his career due to back problems. He played a total of only twelve tournaments and ended the year after Wimbledon. The highlight of the season was reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne , which he lost to Roger Federer in three sets. Due to his injury, he finished the season in 71st place in the world rankings and was unable to reach a final at a tournament for the first time in 14 years in a row.

In 2019 Berdychs should be on the ATP Tour last year. Although this started positively for him with a final at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2019 and reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open , he injured himself again shortly afterwards and missed numerous tournaments. A four-set defeat in the first round of the US Open would be his last official tournament match . Berdych announced his retirement from active professional tennis at the 2019 ATP Finals.

Davis Cup

From 2003 to 2014 Berdych played for the Czech Davis Cup team . In the 2009 season he reached the final with this, but it was clearly lost 5-0 against Spain in Barcelona. In 2012 the team qualified for the second time for the final, which was now being held in Prague . Again the opponent was Spain, who this time were defeated 3-2. Berdych competed in every season encounter and won all his singles and doubles games (with Radek Štěpánek) against Italy , Serbia and Argentina . He and Štěpánek also won their doubles in the final against the reigning world champions Marc López and Marcel Granollers , as did his first single against Nicolás Almagro . Only David Ferrer had to admit defeat 3-0. In the following season , the Czech team was able to defend the title. In the final, she defeated Serbia 3-2. Berdych lost it to Novak Đoković without winning a set, while he defeated Dušan Lajović 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 3. The doubles game against Nenad Zimonjić and Ilija Bozoljac decided Berdych and Štěpánek with 6: 2, 6: 4 and 7: 6 4 for themselves.
