The Sony Ericsson Open 2008 was a tennis tournament that took place from March 24th to April 6th, 2008 in Miami . It was part of the ATP Tour 2008 and was played outdoors on hard courts. This season it was the second of nine tournaments in the ATP Masters Series , which traditionally last two weeks. At the same time, the Sony Ericsson Open women took place in Miami . No other ATP tournaments took place during these weeks.

Defending champion in the singles was Novak Đoković , who a few days after his victory in the Masters in Indians Wells was surprisingly eliminated in the second round against Kevin Anderson . In the final, Nikolai Dawydenko, seeded four, won against second seeding list Rafael Nadal in two sets with 6: 4 and 6: 2. Twins Bob and Mike Bryan were successful in doubles the previous year. They defended their title against the pairing Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles and prevailed 6-2 and 6-2. It was the 45th title of the two.

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 96 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 32 pairs. The 32 top seeded players in the singles each received a bye into the second round. Total prize money was $ 3,520,000 and total financial liabilities were $ 3,770,000.

qualification

The qualification took place on March 22nd and 23rd, 2008. Twelve qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
