Sweeting in 2011

Ryan Sweeting (born July 14, 1987 in Nassau , Bahamas ) is a retired American tennis player .

life and career

Ryan Sweeting was born in Nassau , Bahamas , and started playing tennis at the age of six. At twelve, he moved to the United States to Fort Lauderdale in the state of Florida , where he has since lived and trained. In 2002 he took part in an international junior tournament for the first time, and in 2004 he won his first title. The year 2005 was the most successful as a junior, Sweeting won the US Open and finished the year as number 2 in the junior world rankings.

After he had already competed twice in the Davis Cup for the Bahamas in 2005 and had been able to win an individual, Ryan Sweeting played in men's tournaments from 2006. In May 2006 he was able to win his first title as a qualifier at his third future tournament . In July 2006, he qualified for his first ATP tournament in Washington . There he met the top 100 player Justin Gimelstob , whom he defeated in straight sets before being eliminated in the second round by Arnaud Clément . A month later, he again qualified for an ATP tournament in New Haven , but there he lost in the first round. His rapid rise into the top 500 of the tennis world rankings within a few months was rewarded with a wildcard for the 2006 US Open . There he benefited in the first round from an early abandonment by his opponent Guillermo Coria . In the second round he already led 2-1 sets against Olivier Rochus, who was seeded in 26th position , but ultimately lost the match in five sets. At the end of 2006, Ryan Sweeting took on the US citizenship, for which he ran from now on. He has not yet played for the United States in the Davis Cup, but has served as a training partner in some matches.

At the end of January 2007, Sweeting was able to defeat the two top 100 players Michael Russell and Simon Greul at the Delray Beach ATP tournament , but missed the quarter-finals. In the further course of the year he got a wild card for four other US ATP tournaments (including the US Open ), but he was eliminated in the first round. Otherwise, he played mostly tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour this year , where he reached several quarter-finals and a semi-final in New Orleans and was able to establish himself in the top 300 of the world rankings. In doubles he was able to win three Challenger titles this year, and rose to 145th in the world rankings.

In the first months of 2008, Ryan Sweeting played in qualifying at many ATP tournaments, and finally made the leap into the main draw at the Masters tournament in Miami . There he defeated Filippo Volandri for the first time a player from the top 50 before he was eliminated by Juan Mónaco, who was in 18th position . In the world rankings, he then rose to number 211, his best placement for the time being. Sweeting did not get a wildcard for the US Open this year, but he was able to successfully fight his way through the qualification. In the first main round he failed but to Roko Karanušić . In November 2008, Sweeting achieved his greatest success to date when he won his first Challenger title in individual singles in Rimouski by defeating Kristian Pless .

The year 2009 continued successfully: After a semifinal participation in the Challenger tournament in Nouméa in January 2009, Ryan Sweeting was able to win his second title in February 2009 in Dallas . In the following months he took part in several US ATP tournaments; partly as a qualifier, partly with a wildcard. He was able to reach the second round at the Indian Wells Masters when he defeated the top 100 player Wayne Odesnik . In Houston he was eliminated in qualifying, but was able to reach the final in doubles with his partner Jesse Levine . There they had no chance against the Bryan brothers. In July 2009 Ryan Sweeting reached the second round of an ATP tournament as a qualifier in Los Angeles for the second time this year, and then rose in the world rankings to his new personal best of 141st. For the US Open he got as in previous years 2006 and 2007 a wildcard, but he was defeated in the first round in three tight sets to the later quarter-finalist Marin Čilić . At the end of the year, Sweeting reached two Challenger semifinals in November 2009.

The year 2010 began with the narrowly missed qualification for the Australian Open , followed by a successful title defense at the Challenger tournament in Dallas in February 2010. In the following US hard court tournaments, he was able to qualify for the main field in three of four attempts, and reached the second round in Houston by defeating Yevgeny Korolev . In April and May 2010 he played in several Challenger tournaments, reaching a final and two semifinals in Savannah . As a reward for his recent successes, he received a wildcard for the French Open , but was eliminated in the first round against Juan Ignacio Chela . A month later he failed at Wimbledon in the third qualifying round in five sets to Robert Kendrick , but then moved up as one of seven lucky losers in the main draw . There he lost in four sets against Benjamin Becker . In August 2010 Ryan Sweeting reached the third round of an ATP tournament for the first time in Washington as a qualifier, among other things by defeating the top 50 player Michaël Llodra . But there was the end of the line against Fernando Verdasco, who was in 3rd position . At the US Open , like last year, he received a wildcard, and again he was eliminated in the first round against Ričardas Berankis . At the end of the year, Ryan Sweeting reached his third Challenger final this year in Calabasas , which he lost in three sets against Marinko Matosevic .

In early 2011, Ryan Sweeting was able to qualify for the Australian Open for the first time . In the first main round he prevailed against Daniel Gimeno Traver in three sets , but then had no chance against world number one Rafael Nadal in the second round . Nevertheless, he was able to move into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time for a short time. In February 2011, Sweeting defeated in Delray Beach as a qualifier, first Igor Andrejew and then in the second round Sam Querrey , who was third , and thus made it into the quarter-finals of an ATP tournament for the first time. There he won the first set against Kei Nishikori , but lost the match in three sets. A month later, Ryan Sweeting defeated the top 50 players Marcel Granollers and Juan Mónaco as a qualifier in Indian Wells and thus made it into the third round of a Masters tournament for the first time . There, however, like two months earlier, he lost significantly to Rafael Nadal. In April 2011, Ryan Sweeting had his greatest success to date: At the ATP tournament in Houston , where he entered with a wildcard, he played his way through to the final, among other things by defeating Sam Querrey, who was in second place. There he won his first ATP title in straight sets against Kei Nishikori. In the world rankings he improved to 65th place thanks to his most recent successes.

Sweeting only played one tournament on the Future Tour in 2014 due to a back injury. It was not until January 2015 that another participation in a future and several participations in challengers followed. In April 2015, he received a wild card to qualify for the World Tour tournament in Houston , where he reached the second round. In August 2015, he announced his resignation.

Personal

In March 2006 he was caught driving a car with 1.3 per mille in his blood. Since he also had drugs with him and was believed to want to resell them, he received a suspended sentence of one year and 50 hours of social service. He had to surrender his driver's license for six months.

In September 2013, he became engaged to American actress Kaley Cuoco . The couple married on December 31, 2013. On September 25, 2015, it was announced that the couple were seeking a divorce after only 21 months of marriage.
