Fernando Verdasco Carmona (born November 15, 1983 in Madrid ) is a Spanish tennis player .

Tennis career

The beginnings

Verdasco started playing tennis at the age of four. With his father José, who runs a restaurant in Madrid with his mother Olga, he played on the in-house hard courts. At the age of eight he already had a full-time coach available to train. At the age of 15 he earned his first ATP world ranking point and at 17 he became a professional.

2004 to 2008

Verdasco reached his first ATP final in Acapulco in 2004 , in which he lost 3: 6, 0: 6 to his compatriot Carlos Moyá . In the same year he won his first double title on the tour. With Feliciano López he defeated the Australians Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley 6: 4, 6: 4 in the Stockholm final . His first individual title followed in October 2004 when he won the final of the Valencia Open against his compatriot Albert Montañés 7: 6, 6: 3.

In 2005 he was in his third ATP final at the Generali Open , in which he lost out to Gastón Gaudio 6: 2, 2: 6, 4: 6, 4: 6. In 2006 he reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon , which he lost to Radek Štěpánek in five sets. At the French Open 2007 he was also defeated by Novak Đoković in the second round. In 2008 he won his second ATP title at the Croatia Open ; he prevailed in the final against Igor Andrejew with 3: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 6.

2009 season

At his first ATP tournament in Brisbane in the new year , Verdasco reached the final again, but failed again at Štěpánek 6: 3, 3: 6, 4: 6.

In the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2009 there was a clash with Rafael Nadal . The encounter, which Nadal won 7: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7, 7: 6, 4: 6 after a double fault by Verdasco, was the second longest in tournament history at 5:14 hours. At the same time, Verdasco's participation in the semi-finals was his best result in a Grand Slam tournament . With this, he moved up to the top ten in the world rankings for the first time with position 9 . At the US Open , he reached the quarter-finals, in which he was defeated by fourth place in the world Đoković in four sets.

2010 season

At the Australian Open, Verdasco lost to Nikolai Dawydenko in the round of 16 in a long five-set match . At his next tournament in San José he secured his fourth individual title by defeating top seeded Andy Roddick in the final 3: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 4. The European clay court season also got off to a positive start for him when he reached the final of a Masters tournament in Monte Carlo for the first time , in which defending champion Nadal clearly showed him the limits at 6-0 and 6-1. At the next tournament in Barcelona Verdasco won his second title of the season when he defeated Robin Söderling in the final 6: 3, 4: 6 and 6: 3.
