Richard Gasquet (born June 18, 1986 in Béziers ) is a French tennis player .

Career

Richard Gasquet began playing tennis at the age of four at the TC Sérignan near his hometown of Béziers in southern France.

In 2002 Gasquet was the most successful player in junior tennis. Among other things, he won the junior competition of the French Open and the US Open. He was also the youngest player in the top 200 at the age of 16, finishing the year at position 166 in the world rankings .

Until January 2004 Gasquet was trained by Tarik Benhabiles . That year he reached the semi-finals in Buenos Aires , which he lost 6: 7, 1: 6 to Guillermo Coria , and the final in Metz , where he was defeated by Jérôme Haehnel 6: 7 and 4: 6.

2005 was an extremely successful year for Gasquet. At the Monte Carlo Masters he defeated world number one Roger Federer in the quarterfinals , but in the semifinals he was defeated by Rafael Nadal, who was 17th in the world rankings . At the Masters tournament in Hamburg , Gasquet reached the final and met Federer again, who won this time. At the French Open Gasquet moved into the third round, where he was eliminated again against Nadal. In June he won his first ATP tournament on grass in Nottingham . He also reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the US Open .

2006 was not so good at first. At the Australian Open Gasquet lost in the first round to Tommy Haas , at the French Open in the second round to David Nalbandian . In March he had to admit defeat to Federer again in the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Masters . In June Gasquet was able to defend his title in Nottingham. Nevertheless, he was not seeded for Wimbledon and met again in the first round against world number one and three-time Wimbledon winner Federer, Gasquet lost in three sets. In July he won the Gstaad clay court tournament . In August he moved into the final of the ATP Masters in Toronto , where he again lost to Federer. At the US Open he lost in the round of 16 against Lleyton Hewitt . At the end of the season Gasquet won the Lyon tournament with a clear final victory over Marc Gicquel (6: 3, 6: 1).

At the beginning of 2007 he reached the semi-finals in Sydney and the round of 16 of the Australian Open, where he had to admit defeat to Tommy Robredo . At the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo he reached the quarterfinals and was eliminated from Juan Carlos Ferrero . At the ATP tournament in Estoril Gasquet played his way up to the final, which he lost to Novak Đoković 6: 7, 6: 0 and 1: 6. At the French Open, to the surprise of his fans, he failed in round two against Belgian Kristof Viegen .
At Wimbledon Gasquet reached the quarter-finals, where he was able to defeat Andy Roddick 4: 6, 4: 6, 7: 6, 7: 6 and 8: 6. In the semifinals he was defeated by defending champion Roger Federer 5: 7, 3: 6 and 4: 6. At the US Open, he had to pass in the second round because of an angina . A month later he won the Mumbai tournament (final victory over Olivier Rochus ). The following week he moved into the final in Tokyo , but had to admit defeat to David Ferrer 1: 6 and 2: 6. At the Paris Masters he achieved after victories a. a. over James Blake and Andy Murray the semifinals, where he was defeated by David Nalbandian in straight sets. He qualified for the Masters Cup for the first time , but could only win one of three group games there.

Gasquet reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and Wimbledon as well as at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells, Monte Carlo and Madrid in 2008. At the Canada Masters he lost the quarterfinals against Nadal. At the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart he played his way to the final and lost to Juan Martín del Potro 4-6 and 5-7. At the tournament in Tokyo this time he only reached the semi-finals, which he lost again to del Potro.

The year 2009 began with semi-finals in Brisbane , Sydney and Dubai . During a doping control in March, cocaine was found in his urine, but no trace of the drug was found in a hair sample. He himself always protested his innocence and he was able to explain comprehensibly that cocaine had apparently been in circulation at a party he had attended. The penalty was finally shortened from one year to two months and 15 days, and Gasquet was eligible to play again from mid-July.

In 2010 he moved into the finals of the ATP tournament in Sydney, where he lost to Marcos Baghdatis 4-6 and 6-7 2 . At the Australian Open he was already defeated by Mikhail Juschny 7: 6 9 , 6: 4, 6: 7 2 , 6: 7 4 , 4: 6. In May he was able to win another tournament after two and a half years. At the ATP tournament in Nice he defeated Fernando Verdasco, seeded number 2, 6: 3, 5: 7, 7: 6 5 in the final . In the first round of the French Open against Andy Murray, on the other hand, after 4:04 hours of play, he lost 6: 4, 7: 6, 4: 6, 2: 6, 1: 6.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London Gasquet competed in singles and doubles. After his opening win against Robin Haase , he lost in the second round to Baghdatis 4-6 and 4-6. It went better for him in doubles, with Julien Benneteau he won the bronze medal. They first defeated the British Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins , the seventh seeded Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna and the three seeded Serbs Janko Tipsarević and Nenad Zimonjić . In the semifinals they had to admit defeat to Bob and Mike Bryan from the USA before defeating the Spaniards Feliciano López and David Ferrer in straight sets in the bronze medal match. He was then made a Knight of the French Order of Merit . During the US Open Series Gasquet succeeded for the first time in six years the entry into the finals of a Masters tournament ; in the Toronto final, however, he was clearly defeated by Novak ićoković in straight sets. In Bangkok he won his seventh individual career title at the end of September - his first in over two years. In the final he beat his compatriot Gilles Simon in two straight sets. It also improved steadily in the ranking and at the end of the season was in the top 10 for the first time since 2008.

Gasquet secured the first title of the season right at the start of the 2013 ATP tournament in Doha . In the final, he defeated Nikolai Dawydenko in three sets. In Montpellier he won his next title by defeating his compatriot Benoît Paire in the final in straight sets. At the Sony Open 2013 in Miami he reached the semi-finals, in which he had to admit defeat to Andy Murray 7: 6, 1: 6 and 2: 6. At the tournaments in Monte Carlo , Madrid and Rome Gasquet did not get past the quarter-finals. At the French Open , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets. After victories over Jürgen Melzer and Florian Mayer , he lost the semi-finals against Michail Juschny in Halle / Westphalia . Two weeks later he surprisingly failed in the third round at Wimbledon to Bernard Tomic . After poor preparation, Gasquet succeeded with victories a. a. via Dimitri Tursunow , Milos Raonic and David Ferrer the entry into the semi-finals of the US Open . Only the later tournament winner Rafael Nadal could stop him. At the tournaments in Bangkok and Beijing he played his way to the semifinals before he won his third title of the season in Moscow with a final victory over Mikhail Kukushkin . At the World Tour Finals in London he was eliminated after three defeats in the group stage.

The year 2014 started for Gasquet in Doha with a defeat in the second round against his compatriot Gaël Monfils . At the Australian Open he failed in the third round 6: 2, 5: 7, 4: 6 and 6: 7 to Tommy Robredo . In the Davis Cup he defeated the young Australian Nick Kyrgios . In Montpellier he lost the final against Gaël Monfils as defending champion.
