In the singles, Rafael Nadal won the tournament for the fifth time in a row by beating the Serbian Novak Đoković in the final. He won 6: 3, 2: 6, 6: 1 and thus celebrated his 34th career title. Last year Nadal and Tommy Robredo won doubles . Only Robredo started again and dropped out early. In the final, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić won 6: 4, 6: 1 against Bob and Mike Bryan and thus their first joint title in Monte Carlo. For Nestor it was the first title ever in Monte Carlo, while for Zimonjić it was the third title after 2004 and 2005.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,227,500 euros; the total financial liabilities were 2,750,000 euros.
The qualification took place from April 10th to 11th, 2009. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who moved into the main draw via qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not cumulative (prize money for the double competition per team).
