The defending champion in the singles was the Frenchman Gilles Simon , who did not take part in the tournament this year. In this year's final, the local hero Robby Ginepri won against his compatriot Sam Querrey in two sets with 6: 2 and 6: 4. For Ginepri it was the second title in Indianapolis after 2005 and his third title in his career. In doubles, Ashley Fisher and Tripp Phillips were the defending champions, but they no longer competed together this year. Fisher made it to the finals with his new partner Jordan Kerr as the top seeded pairing. There they were defeated by the duo Ernests Gulbis and Dmitri Tursunow in three sets with 4: 6, 6: 3 and [9:11].
The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize money was $ 450,000; total financial liabilities were $ 519,000.
The qualification took place from July 18-20, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
