Josselin Ouanna (born April 14, 1986 in Tours ) is a former French tennis player .

Career

Until 2007: Junior career and first experiences as a professional

Josselin Ouanna started playing tennis at the age of five. From 2002 he competed in international junior tournaments, where he was able to celebrate several tournament victories. His greatest success as a junior was reaching the final of the Australian Open 2004 , which he lost to his compatriot Gaël Monfils . At the French Open and Wimbledon , he made it to the round of 16, his best place in the junior world rankings was 9th.

From 2003 he also took part in satellite and future tournaments for adults. In June 2003, after two satellite finals, he was listed in the top 700 of the ATP world rankings for the first time . In 2004 he reached a total of four future finals, one of which he was able to win. He also reached the quarter-finals at his first Challenger tournament in Cherbourg in February 2004 .

The years 2005 and 2006 passed without any major highlights: Ouanna never made it through the semi-finals in future tournaments, and never made it past the second round in Challenger tournaments. In 2007 he was able to win two future tournaments again, and he also reached the quarter-finals in two Challenger tournaments. For the French Open 2007 Ouanna got a wildcard for the qualification, but he was eliminated in the first qualifying round. Also at the Masters tournament in Paris in October 2007 he received a wildcard for qualification; he was able to celebrate his first win against a top 100 player against Jonas Björkman before he was eliminated in the second qualifying round.

2008–2010: Challenger title and successes at the French Open

After making the top 300 in 2007, things continued to improve in 2008. In qualifying for the Australian Open he failed in the third qualifying round, but in the following months he was able to improve further in the world rankings thanks to several Challenger quarter-finals. At the French Open he lost again in the third qualifying round, but this time he was one of seven lucky losers in the main draw . In his Grand Slam debut, however, he had no chance against Juan Martín del Potro . In July 2008, Ouanna made it to the ATP tournaments in Gstaad and Kitzbühel , but lost in the first round. In October 2008 he was able to reach a Challenger final in Rennes for the first time and also won his first title against Adrian Mannarino . As a result, he entered the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time and also received a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Lyon as a reward . In the first round he was able to prevail in three tight sets against the top 50 player Ivan Ljubičić and after a second round victory over Nicolás Lapentti he even reached the quarter-finals, in which he was eliminated against the fourth-placed Gilles Simon . For the following Masters tournament in Paris he got another wildcard; he lost there in the first round against Robin Soderling . Nevertheless, this year he had improved by almost 150 places to 154th place.

The year 2009 was even more successful. After a semifinal participation in the Challenger tournament in Besançon , the second Challenger title followed in Saint-Brieuc when he again won against Adrian Mannarino in the final. At the French Open this time he got a wildcard for the main field and he celebrated his first match win at a Grand Slam tournament with a five-set win over Marcel Granollers . In round two it was again five sets against the former world number one Marat Safin , and again Ouanna left the field as the winner after more than four and a half hours of play. In the third round he was eliminated in three sets against the later semi-finalist Fernando González . He was now on the verge of entering the Top 100, which he finally managed in September 2009 when he qualified at the US Open and reached the second round after beating Rajeev Ram . There he lost again to Fernando González, but he improved to 88th place in the world rankings. Since he could not repeat his successes in Rennes and Lyon last year, he fell back to 130th by the end of the year.

After he failed in the first qualifying round for the Australian Open 2010 , Ouanna was able to reach the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn . In February 2010 he came to the second round of the ATP tournaments in Johannesburg and Marseille . After another Challenger semi-final participation in Cherbourg in March 2010, another second round defeat at the ATP tournament in Belgrade followed . At the French Open , as in the previous year, he received a wildcard and used it to win a first round over Łukasz Kubot . In the second round, however, he had no chance against his compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was in 8th position . In the further course of the season Ouanna was able to reach another Challenger semi-final in Recanati , but he no longer played a match at ATP tournaments. In October 2010, together with Gaël Monfils, he achieved his greatest success in doubles, when they beat Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman , who were third in the quarter-finals in Montpellier, and were only eliminated in the semifinals against eventual champions Stephen Huss and Ross Hutchins . Two weeks later, Ouanna was able to qualify for the main draw at the Paris Masters ; he was eliminated there in the first round against Stan Wawrinka .

2011–2015: unsuccessfulness and comeback

In early 2011, Ouanna failed at the Australian Open in the final qualifying round to Jan Hernych . In the further course of the year he was only able to celebrate successes on the Future Tour, on which he reached two finals and three more semi-finals. At Challenger level he was only once in the second round in six tournaments, at the French Open and Wimbledon he was eliminated in the first qualifying round.

In February 2012, Ouanna had dropped to 466th in the world rankings, so that he could only start at the Challenger tournament in Cherbourg thanks to a wildcard. Among other things, by beating Thomas Schoorel , who was in second place, he marched through to the final, in which he defeated Maxime Teixeira in two sets and thus won his third Challenger title.

In 2015, Ouanna announced his retirement from professional tennis. Since then he has been playing amateur tournaments and in the German regional tennis league at TV Espelkamp-Mittwald .
