Ivan Ljubičić [ ˈiʋan ˈʎubitʃitɕ ] (born March 19, 1979 in Banja Luka , SR Bosnia and Herzegovina , Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian tennis player and current coach.

Career

The 1.93 m tall Croatian began his career in 1998. He had the best placement in the tennis world rankings in 2006, when he advanced to 3rd place on the ATP Entry List.

At the tournament in Lyon in 2000 he beat Gustavo Kuerten in the first round and surprisingly Marat Safin in the semifinals . In the final he defeated the Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui 6: 3 and 6: 2 and was able to record his first tournament victory.

In his strongest season in 2005, he won the tournament in Metz and the BA tennis trophy in Vienna within two weeks . In addition, he was in a final six times and lost three times to Roger Federer , the number 1 in the rankings. In Rotterdam he led 4-1 in the decisive third set in the tie-break and still lost to the Swiss. The head-to-head against Roger Federer is 3: 8 from the Croatian's point of view. His strengths include his constant service at around 200 km / h and his one-handed backhand.

Ivan Ljubičić gained fame when he played with Croatia against the USA in the first round of the Davis Cup in 2005 . First he defeated Andre Agassi in three sets. The following day Ljubičić surprisingly defeated the top doubles Bob and Mike Bryan alongside Mario Ančić . On matchday three, Ljubičić defeated Andy Roddick in a 5-set thriller, which meant that the Americans were eliminated for the first time at home in the first round of the Davis Cup. Ljubičić continued his winning streak in the Davis Cup and led Croatia almost single-handedly to win the Davis Cup.

In 2006 he was able to build on his achievements from the previous year. He won three tournaments (Chennai, Zagreb and Vienna). He also reached the semi-finals at the French Open. After a dispute, he took over as playing captain for the Croatian Davis Cup team , after a win against Austria, Croatia was eliminated by Argentina.

The 2007 season began Ljubičić with his 7th career title in Doha . He was also in the finals in Zagreb and Rotterdam, but narrowly lost both finals.

Ljubičić celebrated his most important triumph in March 2010 when he was finally successful in the fourth final in a tournament of the Masters series and won the Indian Wells Masters . On the way there he beat Novak Đoković in the round of 16 and Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals , before then defeating Andy Roddick 7: 6 (3), 7: 6 (5) in the final.

2011 at the French Open

As previously announced, Ljubičić resigned from professional tennis after retiring from the Monte Carlo Masters 2012 . He was defeated by his compatriot Ivan Dodig in two sentences.

Oddities

At the beginning of 2005, Ljubičić had to experience a more or less nasty surprise. At the Tennis Masters in Miami, he met a naked man in the locker of his changing room. It was the French double specialist Michaël Llodra , who wanted to absorb the positive vibrations of Ljubičić.

Trainer

From 2013 to the end of 2015, Ljubičić coached the Canadian Milos Raonic . He has been on Roger Federer's coaching staff since January 2016 .

Personal

Ljubičić had to emigrate to Italy at the age of 14 because of the civil war in Yugoslavia. Today he lives in Monte Carlo . In November 2004 he married his wife Aida. Four years later, in November 2008, Ljubičić became a father for the first time.
