The ATP tournament in Vienna (officially Erste Bank Open ) is a tennis tournament in the ATP Tour 500 category . It has taken place every October since 1974 in the Wiener Stadthalle in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus . The game is played on the Rebound Ace rubber . Together with the tournament in Kitzbühel , it is currently one of two ATP World Tour tournaments in Austria and will take place in one week in October at the same time as the tournament in Basel .
history
The tournament was held for the first time in 1974. The prize money at the time was $ 25,000 and was raised by various sponsors. After a one-year break, Fischer was able to be won as the main sponsor and, as Fischer-GP , this liaison lasted until 1985. After that, Creditanstalt took over his task , and later Bank Austria - Creditanstalt . The competition was held from 1986 under the name CA-, BA-CA- and BA-TennisTrophy , since 2011 the tournament has been taking place under the name Erste Bank Open after a further change of sponsor . At first they played on the Green Set surface, later on Supreme Court and Opticourt by Schneider Tennis , since 2015 they have played on Rebound Ace. The tournament is characterized by performances and victories by young talents such as Ivan Lendl and Roger Federer , but also by numerous established stars such as Pete Sampras , Boris Becker , Andre Agassi , Goran Ivanišević and Stefan Edberg . The appearance of local players from Thomas Muster , Horst Skoff and Alexander Antonitsch to Jürgen Melzer , Stefan Koubek and Dominic Thiem is also particularly attractive . The tournament was part of the ATP Championship Series from 1996 to 1997 and the ATP International Series Gold from 1998 to 2008, the successor series, which was renamed the ATP Tour 500 again in 2009 . Until 2015, however, it was part of the ATP Tour 250 , the third highest category within the tournament series organized by the ATP . Since 2015 it has been an ATP Tour 500 tournament again.
