Rohan Machanda Bopanna (born March 4, 1980 in Bangalore ) is an Indian tennis player .
life and career
Rohann Bopanna started playing tennis at the age of eleven. His father, a coffee farmer, wanted his son to play an individual sport instead of the team sports popular in India, cricket and hockey .
Even as a junior, it became clear that Bopanna's strengths lay mainly in doubles: with changing partners, he won several tournaments in 1997 and 1998. In 1999 he moved to the adult sector and initially played in satellite and future tournaments. In 2001 he reached two future finals in singles and a future final in doubles, and entered the top 600 in both categories of the tennis world rankings .
The year 2002 began with Bopanna's ATP debut in Chennai , where he received a wild card together with Carlos Cuadrado . However, they were eliminated in the first round. In the further course of the year Bopanna was able to win two future single titles and four future double titles, most of them together with Vijay Kannan. He also made his debut for the Indian Davis Cup team against Australia in September 2002, but could not prevent the 5-0 defeat.
At the beginning of 2003 Rohan Bopanna got a wildcard for the singles main draw in Chennai , but he lost in the first round against Željko Krajan . In the Davis Cup matches against Japan and New Zealand, Bopanna was able to win one of two singles; India won both games 4-1. In March 2003 he reached his first Challenger final together with Fred Hemmes in Ho Chi Minh City . In July 2003 Bopanna played for the first time together with the Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi , with whom he won his first Challenger title in Denver . The partnership initially only lasted for three tournaments, but was later to be successfully continued. In the singles Bopanna was able to win his third Future title in August 2003; at Challenger tournaments that year he never got past the second round.
The year 2004 was less successful for Bopanna: He could only win one future title in doubles (with Mustafa Ghouse ) and then had to take a complete break from July 2004 to March 2005 due to a shoulder operation. The comeback year 2005 was all the more successful, with future titles in both singles and doubles. After participating in the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Bukhara , Bopanna achieved his best individual placement to date with 266th place.
In January 2006, Bopanna was able to qualify for the Chennai ATP tournament and was able to celebrate his first ATP victory in the first round against the top 100 player Cyril Saulnier before he was eliminated in the second round by Gilles Müller . In doubles he got a wild card with his compatriot Prakash Amritraj and immediately reached the final. In the further course of the year the two reached two Challenger finals, one of which they could win in Aptos . After another ATP final in Mumbai with Mustafa Ghouse and a Challenger final at the side of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi , Bopanna reached place 107 in the double world rankings. In singles, Bopanna tried for the first time this year to win the Grand Slam -Tournaments to qualify never got past the second qualifying round. But he managed to qualify at the ATP tournament in Halle , where he lost in the first round against world number one Roger Federer in two tight sets. In Bukhara he reached a Challenger final as a qualifier for the first time, but lost to Janko Tipsarević .
At the beginning of 2007, Bopanna competed at the Hopman Cup together with Sania Mirza . They were able to win all three doubles, but Bopanna lost all three singles, so that India ultimately missed the final with second place in the preliminary round. In April 2007, Bopanna was able to win a Davis Cup match against Kazakhstan for the first time in four years. In July 2007, Bopanna started a series of successes: First he won his first Challenger title in individual against Martin Pedersen in Dublin ; he also won the doubles competition with Adam Feeney . Two weeks later he reached the semi-finals in Manchester and then achieved his best place in the individual world rankings with 213th place. In doubles he played together with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi again at this tournament and the two won their second joint title. In the following weeks the "Indo-Pak-Express" won four Challenger tournaments in a row (after Manchester there were titles in Nottingham , Segovia and the Bronx ), and for the first time reached a place in the top 100 of the double world rankings. At the ATP tournament in Mumbai , the two made it through to the finals and caused a positive sensation due to the religious and political conflicts in their home countries India and Pakistan. At the end of the year they reached two more Challenger finals, and Bopanna was at the side of Olivier Rochus in the semifinals of the ATP tournament in Stockholm .
The year 2008 began like the previous year with a participation in the Hopman Cup together with Sania Mirza . And again they were able to win all three doubles, but did not reach the final due to three individual defeats by Bopanna. At the Australian Open , Bopanna made his Grand Slam debut at the side of Rajeev Ram and was able to reach the round of 16 with this by defeating Paul Hanley and Leander Paes, who were fifth . In the Davis Cup he was able to contribute a single victory to the 3-2 victories over Uzbekistan and Japan, against Uzbekistan also a double victory with Mahesh Bhupathi . From now on he mainly played ATP tournaments, mostly at the side of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi . After they were eliminated in the first round at the French Open against the top seeded Bryan brothers Bob and Mike and had reached the second round at Wimbledon , they only had to admit defeat in the final against Mardy Fish and John Isner at the Newport ATP tournament . In Newport, Bopanna also reached the quarter-finals in the singles, defeating the top seeded Mardy Fish. In August 2008, Rohan Bopanna was finally able to win his first ATP title alongside Eric Butorac in Los Angeles . He also reached another ATP final with Max Mirny in St. Petersburg in October .
In early 2009, Bopanna played a few tournaments with Jarkko Nieminen . At the Australian Open they reached the second round and the final at the ATP tournament in San José . In addition, Bopanna was able to reach two more ATP semifinals this year: In Munich alongside Travis Parrott , and in Moscow with Janko Tipsarević . With Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi he also won three Challenger titles in Khorat , Aachen and Helsinki . The greatest successes as a single player this year were reaching the second round at the Kuala Lumpur ATP tournament , where he defeated the top 100 player José Acasuso , and reaching the quarter-finals at the Challenger tournament in Rhodes .
After Bopanna and Qureshi were eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open in January 2010 , they won their first joint ATP title two weeks later in Johannesburg against Karol Beck and Harel Levy . After participating in the semi-finals at the ATP tournament in Marseille alongside Jeff Coetzee and a Challenger title in Jersey together with Ken Skupski , Bopanna was only able to reach a Challenger final in Naples with Qureshi in April 2010 and an ATP final in April 2010 Reach Casablanca . The next defeat in the final followed in Nice in May 2010 , followed by a second round at the French Open . In Wimbledon , the "Indo-Pak-Express" was able to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, where they had to admit defeat to the eventual winners Jürgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner . They also drew attention to themselves with their “Stop War Start Tennis” campaign. At the ATP tournament in Atlanta Bopanna competed with Kristof Viegen , as Qureshi played for Pakistan in the Davis Cup this week. Although they had never played together before, they were able to reach the final straight away. In the following weeks Bopanna played again with Qureshi, with whom he reached the semifinals in Los Angeles and Washington and the finals in New Haven . They were able to defeat, among others, the world number one Bob and Mike Bryan . At the US Open 2010 , Bopanna and Qureshi finally achieved the greatest success of their careers to date: After defeating the pairing Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić, who were seeded in second place in the round of 16 , they marched through to the final, where they defeated Bryan in two tight sets -Brothers documents. The following week he played with India in the Davis Cup against Brazil to maintain membership of the world group. Bopanna lost his first individual against Thomaz Bellucci in five tight sets, but in the last and decisive individual he was able to prevail clearly against Ricardo Mello and thus secure the 3-2 victory for India. In October 2010, Bopanna took part in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. In the singles, he failed in the second round to second-placed Peter Luczak , in doubles he lost to Somdev Devvarman's side in the bronze medal game. After they were eliminated in the quarterfinals in Shanghai and Moscow , Bopanna and Qureshi were able to reach a final again in Saint Petersburg . However, they lost in two tight sets against Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace . As a result, they missed qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals in London in November 2010 as the ninth-best team of the season , but were invited to the event anyway, as they were honored there with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Of The Year Award . In December 2010, Bopanna and Qureshi were also awarded the Grand Prix of Peace & Sports by Prince Albert in Monaco .
In early 2011, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi reached the round of 16 after participating in the semi-finals at the Sydney ATP tournament at the Australian Open , where they lost in three tight sets.
