Career
Petzschner began his career at TC Fichtelgebirge in Weidenberg . He currently plays in the first tennis league for the reigning German champions TK Kurhaus Lambertz Aachen . His greatest success in the junior sector was winning the double title of the French Open in 2002.
2001 to 2005
At the beginning of his professional career, Petzschner played Challenger and Future tournaments . He reached the final of a Swiss future tournament in October 2001 and won his first title in the Czech Republic a year later in December.
Petzschner had his first appearance at an ATP World Tour tournament in July 2003 in Stuttgart , but was eliminated there in the first round. He won his first two games on the tour in September 2003 in Metz , where he reached the quarter-finals.
At national level, he won the German individual championship title in 2004 .
Thanks to a wildcard , Petzschner was able to play his first tournament in the ATP Masters Series in May 2005 . In Hamburg he failed in the first round.
Petzschner also played more tournaments in the Challenger and Future categories in doubles. The start of his professional career in doubles was all the more successful. In July 2001 he played his first ATP tournament with Simon Stadler in Stuttgart (first round defeat). He celebrated his first victory in a future tournament in November of the same year in Switzerland with the Swiss Stéphane Bohli . In 2002 he won further future tournaments with Simon Stadler in Germany and the Czech Republic and played with Björn Phau in the first round at the ATP Masters tournament in Hamburg. Further highlights in his career were the victories with Christopher Kas in 2004 at the Challenger tournaments in Mönchengladbach and Eckental, followed by further Challenger titles with Christopher Kas in Dresden , Mons and Eckental and with Alexander Peya in Wolfsburg .
2006 to 2011
singles
In March 2006 he won another future tournament in Abu Dhabi and then played increasingly challenger tournaments. At the US Open 2007 he qualified for the first time in singles for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament and reached the second round with a five-set win against Benjamin Becker . There he lost to Tommy Haas in four sets. In the Davis Cup semi-finals in Russia in 2007, he made his debut for the German Davis Cup team . At the side of Alexander Waske for the injured Michael Kohlmann , he brought the team with a four-set win 2-1. The following day he took on the sick Tommy Haas and celebrated his single debut, which he lost in four sets against Mikhail Juschny , who was 189 places better .
He won his first Challenger title in Rennes in October . In 2008 Petzschner played the qualification for Wimbledon , where Petzschner could qualify for the main draw and also reach the second round. His career highlight was in October when he won his first tournament on the ATP tour . In the final of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy , he defeated Frenchman Gaël Monfils, who was 97 places higher, 6: 4 and 6: 4. Petzschner won the tournament after having to play through the qualification. In 2009 he reached the third round at Wimbledon and the round of 16 of the Rogers Cup in Montreal and the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC. He also played his way to the quarter-finals at the ATP tournament in Metz . Petzschner finished the year 80th in the ATP world rankings.
2010 is the best season in Petzschner's career so far. The year started for him with two first round defeats in Brisbane and at the Australian Open, which was still bumpy. Petzschner was only able to reach his top form in February. He played his way to the semi-finals in Zagreb before failing to compatriot Michael Berrer . At the same tournament, Petzschner won his first double title alongside the Austrian Jürgen Melzer . Two weeks later he reached the semifinals again in Memphis , USA, where he was defeated by John Isner in three sets . At the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , Petzschner did not get beyond the second or third round. In Indian Wells he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber , in Miami he was defeated by Robin Söderling . Petzschner started the clay court season with another third round entry in Monte Carlo . Here he had to admit defeat to Philipp Kohlschreiber again after victories over Guillermo García-López and his doubles partner Jürgen Melzer. A short time later, Petzschner advanced again to the semi-finals in front of a home crowd in Munich . He suggested u. a. the Czech Tomáš Berdych in three sets (1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4), before Michail Juschny was one size too big for him (5: 7, 6: 7). At the ATP tournament in Madrid , Petzschner fended off a match ball in round one against Fabio Fognini , in round two he had to give up against Gaël Monfils when the score was 1-1 in the first set due to injury. In the first round of the second Grand Slam tournament of the year in Roland Garros , Petzschner gambled away a 2-0 set lead against Australian Carsten Ball and lost 7: 9 in the fifth set.
Then Petzschner went to prepare for Wimbledon at the lawn tournament in Halle , where he advanced to a semifinals for the fourth time in the season. After victories over Marcos Baghdatis , Viktor Troicki and Lukáš Lacko, he lost to Roger Federer 6-7 , 4-6 despite excellent chances . In Wimbledon Petzschner celebrated the biggest success of his career. He won the doubles competition alongside Jürgen Melzer. In the final, the two defeated the Swedish-Romanian pairing of Simon Aspelin and Horia Tecău . In the individual , Petzschner barely missed a big coup. After five set wins over Stéphane Robert and Łukasz Kubot , he was already leading 2-1 in sets against the number one in the world, Rafael Nadal . But this turned the game in his favor (4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6, 2: 6, 3: 6).
In the following five tournaments, Petzschner failed in the first round. Only at the US Open at the end of August did he win again after two months against qualifier Dušan Lojda . In round two he failed 5: 7, 3: 6, 6: 7 against the Serb Novak Đoković . At the end of August, Petzschner qualified in doubles with Jürgen Melzer for the World Tour Finals in London. In September he injured his ankle in a game in the Austrian Bundesliga and was out for ten weeks. He finished the year as number 57 in the world and earned 702,058 US dollars with a match balance of 21:19.
In 2011, Petzschner failed in round one of the Australian Open to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after leading the set 2-0 in five sets. Two weeks later he reached the second round of the Zagreb indoor tournament . After three years of abstinence, Petzschner was called up again for the first round game in the Davis Cup against Croatia. With a five-set win in doubles alongside Christopher Kas and a smooth three-set win in the decisive fifth individual, Petzschner contributed significantly to the 3-2 victory of the German team. Petzschner reached his first semi-final of the season at the BMW Open in Munich. He failed to Florian Mayer after defeating the top seeded Michail Juschny, among others. At the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf, Petzschner helped the German team when he put the team in the lead against Russia with his victory over Igor Andrejew . In the final, too, he played the decisive double alongside Philipp Kohlschreiber and helped Germany win its fifth title. At the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Petzschner reached his first final after his triumph in Vienna in 2008. On the way there he defeated, among others, the number two seeded Czech Tomáš Berdych. In the final he had to give up at 6: 7, 0: 2 due to a back injury and let Philipp Kohlschreiber take the title.
Double
The greatest success in the meantime was the achievement of the double semifinals at the ATP tournament in Marseille in 2006 and victories at the Challenger tournaments in Heilbronn , Besançon (with Christopher Kas ) and Cardiff (with Alexander Peya ).
The first Grand Slam participation also followed in doubles in 2006. With Kas, Petzschner lost at the French Open in the first round and at the US Open in the second round. He played the Wimbledon tournament with Olivier Rochus and also reached the second round. Due to these successes he climbed to 61st place in the ATP double world rankings in September 2006.
At the beginning of 2007 he took part in the doubles competition at the Australian Open for the first time with Christopher Kas . The two lost in the first round. At the end of 2007 further Challenger victories followed with changing partners: Donetsk, Rennes, Aachen and Eckental.
The year 2008 began with an appearance in the first Davis Cup round against the team from Korea. With partner Philipp Kohlschreiber, he defeated the Korean duo 6: 1, 6: 3 and 6: 3. In April he played against Spain in doubles with Kohlschreiber, this time the two lost in five sets with 7: 6, 6: 7, 4: 6, 6: 2 and 10:12. The title defense followed in Besançon in February.
Petzschner was nominated for the World Team Cup for the first time in May 2008, he played all three preliminary round doubles with Christopher Kas. They defeated the Spanish duo 6: 7, 6: 4 and [10: 5], lost to the Italians 6: 3, 3: 6 and [4:10] and the Russians 6: 7 and 3: 6. The Grand Slam tournaments Wimbledon and US Open formed the preliminary career highlight. Petzschner reached the quarter-finals both times. At Wimbledon he lost with Alexander Peya to the eventual finalists Jonas Björkman and Kevin Ullyett 6: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6, 7: 6 and 2: 6, at the US Open with Christopher Kas to the eventual winners Bob and Mike Bryan 6 : 7 and 4: 6. Similar to his success in singles at the ATP tournament in Vienna, he also made it into an ATP final for the first time in doubles. With the Austrian Alexander Peya he lost to Max Mirny and Andy Ram in two sets with 1: 6 and 5: 7. Due to his success in 2008, he climbed to 39th place in the double world rankings in October.
In 2009 Petzschner was a semi-finalist with Alexander Peya in Memphis and Newport . They also won the Challenger tournament in Tenerife .
In 2010 he won the tournament in Zagreb and the men's doubles at Wimbledon alongside Jürgen Melzer . The latter was his first Grand Slam title and thus his greatest success to date. It was the first victory of a male German tennis player at Wimbledon since Michael Stich won the men's doubles in 1992. At the ATP World Tour Finals 2010 in London, Petzschner / Melzer were eliminated in the group stage as third. The first game was lost 3: 6, 5: 7 against the Bryan twins, followed by a three-set win over Leander Paes and Lukáš Dlouhý , which once again gave rise to hope for the semi-finals. Petzschner and Melzer then lost the decisive final group game against the Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 3: 6, 6: 7. Petzschner finished the year with a match record of 22:16 and was number 20 in the world.
He started 2011 with the quarter-finals at the Australian Open alongside Jürgen Melzer. In Rotterdam the two won their third double title as a couple, in the final they defeated Michaël Llodra and Nenad Zimonjić 6: 4, 3: 6, [10: 5]. Petzschner then won the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf in the final against Argentina alongside Philipp Kohlschreiber. At the US Open , Petzschner and Melzer prevailed in two sets against Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski and thus won their second joint Grand Slam title.
2012 until today
Petzschner played all Grand Slam tournaments with one exception in 2012 and 2013, but continuously fell behind in the world rankings. Although he managed to reach the final in 's-Hertogenbosch in June 2012, which he lost to David Ferrer , at the end of the year he was not even in the top 200. Due to injuries, he was rarely able to play for a long period of time .
In doubles he was much more successful. In 2012 at the side of Jürgen Melzer and in 2015 as a partner of Jonathan Erlich from Israel, Philipp Petzschner only dropped out in the semifinals at Wimbledon. He also won the title in Vienna 2014 and Båstad 2017 and also reached four other finals. After his victory in Båstad in July 2017, he did not play another tournament that season. At the end of the year he was in 71st place.
After winning two double titles on the Challenger Tour in 2018, he achieved another success on the World Tour in Stuttgart after almost a year in June . At the side of Tim Pütz , he won the double final against Robert Lindstedt and Marcin Matkowski in straight sets. In October 2018 he played his last professional game on the tour, which ended his professional career. At the beginning of 2020 he became the national youth coach at the German Tennis Association .
