Björn Phau (born October 4, 1979 in Darmstadt ) is a former German tennis player .

Tennis career

Phau, whose father is from Indonesia , has been a professional since 1999. His most successful year was the 2006 season when he rose to number 59 in the world rankings . In Tokyo he reached a semifinal for the first time in 2005 at the International Series Gold . In 2005 and 2006 he came to the second round of the Australian Open . In 2006 he was in the semi-finals of Casablanca .

His greatest success in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals at the French Open 2006 in the doubles competition, when he lost 6-7 and 6-7 with Alexander Peya to the Czech doubles Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner . With Peya he was also in his only ATP final: in 2006 in Munich he and Peya lost 4: 6 and 2: 6 in the doubles competition against Andrei Pavel and Alexander Waske .

Furthermore, he was number three of the German team champion TK Grün-Weiss Mannheim in 2005 and 2007 .

At the US Open 2008 Phau qualified for the main draw, but had to admit defeat to world number one Rafael Nadal 6: 7, 3: 6 and 6: 7 in the first round . At the ATP tournament in Tokyo he reached a semi-finals on the ATP World Tour for the third time with wins against Sam Querrey and Fernando González and was defeated there by the top seed Andy Roddick with 2: 6, 7: 6 and 2: 6.

In April 2009 he reached the semifinals at the ATP tournament in Houston , where he was defeated by Wayne Odesnik 4-6 and 3-6. On the way there, he defeated Mardy Fish, who was in 28th position in the world rankings, 6: 3, 5: 7 and 6: 3 in the first round and in the quarter-finals in the German duel Tommy Haas 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6 : 3.

In September 2010 he reached the quarter-finals of the BCR Romania Open in Bucharest , where he failed to Juan Ignacio Chela .

The year 2011 began with a quarter-finals in Chennai , which he lost to Xavier Malisse . At the Grand Slams in Melbourne and Paris , he was eliminated in the first round. Immediately after the French Open, he won the Challenger tournament in Marburg , but lost in Wimbledon in the first qualifying round.

In 2012 he won his sixth and seventh title on the Challenger Tour with the tournaments in Heilbronn and Bergamo . In doubles he won a total of nine titles.

He reached his first semi-final on the ATP Tour since 2009 at the 2014 tournament in Zagreb . About the qualification he made it into the main field. In the course of this, he beat Michail Juschny , who was in 15th place in the world, and No. 78 in the world, Dudi Sela . In the semifinals Phau lost to the eventual winner Marin Čilić . In the world rankings he improved by 135 places to 223.

In October 2014, he retired due to a persistent knee injury.
