Yu Xinyuan ( Chinese  于 欣 源 ; born February 13, 1985 in Beijing ) is a former Chinese tennis player .

Career

Beginnings of the career and medal winning at the Asian Games (2003-2006)

Yu played his first tournaments on the ITF Future Tour in 2003 . Just one year later he was nominated for the first time for the Chinese Davis Cup team . Both in the game against the Philippines and against Kuwait , he was able to win his games. After his first successes in doubles, he received a wildcard for the main draw in Beijing and made his debut on the ATP World Tour , but failed in the first round. A year later he was back in the main draw of the same tournament thanks to another wildcard. Unlike last year, he and his partner Zeng Shaoxuan made it to the semi-finals this time, where they were eliminated from Michael Berrer and Kenneth Carlsen . In December, Yu took part in the Asian Games . He played in doubles, in team competition and in mixed. While he was eliminated in the first round in doubles and team, he won the bronze medal in mixed together with Sun Tiantian .

First successes on the Challenger Tour and participation in the Olympic Games (2007-2008)

In March he won the double title at his first tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour in Ho Chi Minh City . In May of that year he was among the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time . While his career stagnated somewhat in singles - he no longer won a future title and rarely got past the second round at Challenger tournaments - he was all the more successful in doubles. He was in the final with his permanent partner Zeng in Recanati and won his second challenger title in New Delhi in December .

The following year he won his next titles in Guangzhou and Reggio nell'Emilia . At the Summer Olympics in Beijing , he played both singles and doubles . In the singles he was eliminated in the first round against Tomáš Berdych , in doubles alongside Sun Peng against the Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski . In September, Yu contributed with his double success in the Davis Cup encounter against New Zealand to ensure that China was promoted to Group I in the Oceania / Asia zone. After surviving the opening round of a World Tour event in Beijing for the first time, he achieved his career record in doubles with 136th place in November.

Slipping in the world rankings and end of career (2009-2010)

In 2009, Yu could not build on his successes from previous years, which caused him to slip out of the top 500 in the world rankings. Since he was no longer qualified for Challenger tournaments, he mainly played tournaments of the Future Tour and only won two other titles there. He received a wildcard for the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Shanghai , but retired with Gao Wan in the first round against Julian Knowle and Jürgen Melzer . This was his last major tournament and he ended his professional career in 2010.
