The Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place from October 11th to 18th, 2009 in Shanghai . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on hard courts. This season it was the eighth of nine tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category .

The tournament in Shanghai replaced the Masters tournament in Hamburg , which from then on only belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category . The first individual event was won by the six seeded Russian Nikolai Dawydenko against the top seeded Rafael Nadal 7: 6 3 , 6: 3. With that he won his fourth title of the year and his 18th career title. In doubles, the unseeded French Julien Benneteau and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga surprisingly prevailed 6: 4, 6: 2 against Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski .

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 3,240,000; total financial liabilities were $ 5,250,000.

The qualification took place from October 9-10, 2009. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
