The Aircel Chennai Open 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place from January 5th to 11th, 2009 in Chennai . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on hard courts. The same week the Qatar ExxonMobil Open was played in Doha and the Brisbane International in Brisbane , which, like the Aircel Chennai Open, belonged to the ATP World Tour 250 category .

The Croatian Marin Čilić , seeded third, celebrated his first triumph in Chennai this year. He gave up only one set up to the final and won there against Somdev Devvarman from India, who started with a wildcard, in two sets 6: 4, 7: 6 3 . With that, Čilić won his second overall title at the ATP level. In doubles, Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana won last year , but they did not compete again this year. In the final, the American duo Eric Butorac and Rajeev Ram prevailed against the Swiss doubles Jean-Claude Scherrer and Stan Wawrinka 6: 3, 6: 4.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize pool was $ 398,250; total financial liabilities were $ 450,000.
