Rainer Schüttler (born April 25, 1976 in Korbach ) is a former German tennis player .
Tennis career
Schüttler's strengths are his baseline game, fighting spirit and footwork. He reached his best world ranking position in mid-2004 with fifth place in the entry system . Among his career highlights were the finals at the Australian Open 2003 and the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo 2004 as well as the semi-finals at the Masters Cup 2003 and Wimbledon 2008. In the course of his career he was able to play at the ATP tournaments in Doha in 1999, Shanghai 2002, Tokyo and Lyon triumph in 2003. From 1999 to 2009 Schüttler played for the German Davis Cup team , in which he has a 9: 9 record.
In 2003 Schüttler played the best tennis of his career. At the Australian Open he reached the Grand Slam final. Placed in 31st place, he beat number ten on the seeding list David Nalbandian in the quarterfinals and Andy Roddick , number nine on the seeding list, in the semifinals . He lost to second seeding list Andre Agassi in the final. The Dutchman and later finalist of the French Open, Martin Verkerk , defeated Schüttler in the round of 16 by Roland Garros. At Wimbledon and at the US Open, he was subject to number twelve in the world rankings in the round of 16, the Dutchman Sjeng Schalken . In August 2003, he beat world number one Andre Agassi in the quarterfinals of the Masters tournament in Montreal . The tournament in Tokyo in October of that year he won against the French Sébastien Grosjean . A week later he defeated Arnaud Clément in the final in Lyon. With all these successes, Rainer Schüttler qualified for the Masters Cup in Houston. There he beat Andy Roddick, number one in the world rankings, and the Argentine Guillermo Coria in the group stage . In the semifinals he was defeated by Andre Agassi. He finished the tennis year in sixth place in the world rankings.
Probably his most significant success was achieved with Nicolas Kiefer : The two won the silver medal in men's doubles at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on March 16, 2005.
Schüttler won a total of four single and four double titles. Since his success up to 2004 he has been seen less often in high-class encounters. One reason for this slump are various injuries. In early 2006, Schüttler fell ill with Pfeiffer glandular fever . In 2007 he was able to reach the quarter-finals again in doubles with Michael Kohlmann at the French Open .
In April and May 2008 he won two double titles on the ATP tour within a fortnight - on April 20, 2008 in Houston alongside Ernests Gulbis from Latvia and on May 4, 2008 at the BMW Open in Munich with partner Michael Berrer . At the tournament in Wimbledon in 2008 Schüttler also reached the semifinals for the first time after five-set wins over James Blake and Arnaud Clément , in which he was defeated in three sets against the then world number two Rafael Nadal . He improved by 55 places to 39th place in the world rankings. After failing to qualify for the 2008 Olympics , the NOK nominated him as a special case outside of the qualification criteria. Since he still would not have had the right to appear in detail, he forced it to be listed by filing a lawsuit before the CAS . In the first round he then faced Kei Nishikori from Japan , whom he defeated 6: 4, 6: 7 and 6: 3. Then it went in the second round against the favorite Novak Đoković , the Schüttler defeated 4: 6 and 2: 6 despite a great fight and good tennis. At the subsequent US Open, due to a cold, he had to give up in the first round in the game against Frenchman Florent Serra .
After the semi-finals in Chennai at the beginning of 2009, the following tournaments mostly suffered first or second round defeats. As world number 30. he also only reached the quarter-finals of the Challenger tournament at Sunrise , where he was defeated by Robin Soderling in three tight sets. In the first round of the Davis Cup he lost the opening match against Stefan Koubek , after which he did not play another match against Austria. At the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf he lost three of his four games, including a. against Robin Söderling with the maximum penalty of 0: 6 and 0: 6. The team nevertheless reached the final against Serbia, where Schüttler could not win again against Viktor Troicki . In June he reached the semi-finals at the lawn tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , but lost it in a purely German duel against the eventual winner Benjamin Becker . At Wimbledon he only reached the second round. He lost there against Dudi Sela and slipped 53 places in the world rankings.
In early 2010 he reached the second round at the Australian Open in Melbourne with a four-set win over Sam Querrey , where he lost to Feliciano López in four sets. At the French Open in Paris, as in previous years, he did not get beyond the first round (against Guillermo García-López ). At the AEGON Championships in the Queen's Club in London, Schüttler reached the semi-finals, this time losing to Sam Querrey in three sets. At Wimbledon he was defeated in the second round by the Uzbek Denis Istomin in five sets. He then played his way to the quarter-finals in Los Angeles , but had to bend again to Sam Querrey, although he served in the third set at 5: 4 and 6: 5 to win the match. At the US Open, Schüttler lost in the first round to Frenchman Benoît Paire - in the decisive fifth set he already led 5-2 with two breaks, but lost in the tie-break. At the Thailand Open in Bangkok, Schüttler played his way through a victory over Ricardo Mello up to round two, where he was defeated 6: 7, 7: 6, 4: 6 to number four seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis. In Saint Petersburg he reached the second round after defeating Viktor Troicki and was defeated there by the Ukrainian Oleksandr Dolhopolow . At the end of 2010, Schüttler and his former Davis Cup teammate Alexander Waske founded a professional tennis academy, the Schüttler Waske Tennis University in Offenbach, which promotes young talent. After seven years, the license from Schüttler's name in the title expired, so that the training facility is now called Alexander Waske Tennis University .
At the French Open in 2011, Schüttler already lost the opening match - again against Dolgopolov. And at the Queen's Club in London he only reached the second round. He lost to Sam Querrey in three sets.
On October 8, 2012, Schüttler announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Today Rainer Schüttler lives or lives on Lake Zurich.
