Life

Little is known about Branimir's reign. He deposed his predecessor Zdeslav and killed him. Since Zdeslav was allied with the Byzantine emperor, Branimir turned to Pope John VIII with a request for recognition of his government. This welcomed the change in the balance of power as a return to the bosom of the Roman Church, he was able to bind Croatia permanently to the Western Church .

Some historians believe that he could be a member of the Domagojević family , particularly one of the sons of Prince Domagoj .

His exact date of death as well as the exact circumstances of death are unknown. Only with Iohannis Timerius bilealde is the legend that Branimir, after a feast with Frankish envoys of Charles III. drank the water of the Adriatic in a mess, over which he could assert control over Venice. Then he died. This version already refers Erik Krznoski to the realm of legends and pointed out the parallels to the death of the Illyrian king Agron due to excessive alcohol consumption on the occasion of a victory.

traces

The name Branimir can be found on four stone inscriptions, on one of which he is addressed with the title dux (prince). This dates from the year 888 .
