Braslav

Braslav (also Brazlavan , Brazlovon , Brasclauo , Braxlauo , Brazlawo ; * mid 9th century ; † early 10th century ) was the last Knes of Lower Pannonia from around 880 to 897/898 , which was under East Franconian sovereignty during his rule .

According to older sources, the present-day Slovak capital, Bratislava, was named after Braslav, or a person of the same name, around 900 .

Life

Under King Arnulf of Carinthia , Braslav fought against its Slavic neighbor, Prince Svatopluk of Greater Moravia. The alliance against Great Moravia was strengthened by the Magyars , who also fought on the side of King Arnulf.

Expansion of Pannonian Croatia under Braslav's rule

After Arnulf's death, the Magyars turned against the new Frankish king, who then commissioned Braslav with the Balaton Principality in 896 to protect against the Magyar pillage trains. Braslav also became ruler of Carantania . In 901 the Magyars overran Braslav's territory.
