Live and act
Like his predecessors, he expanded his sphere of influence on the eastern Adriatic . He focused on rebuilding Croatian military power and sent most of his fleet in support of the Byzantines during the war against the Arabs . Stjepan hoped through this Croatian-Byzantine alliance to prevent the Republic of Venice from attacking the Croatian coast.
Trade and handicrafts flourished under Stjepan I. Major aristocrats moved to Zadar , Biograd , Knin , Split , Dubrovnik and other coastal cities. At the same time, the cities in Slavonia grew . In particular along the Sava , many people moved further north in search of arable land. The two largest cities at that time were Zagreb and Sisak .
He was succeeded by his son Petar Krešimir IV in 1058 .
Stjepan I had two sons:
- Petar Krešimir IV , who became his successor
- His son not known by name, the father of the future King Stjepan II.
