Around 1059 Biograd became a bishopric; In the same year the Benedictine monastery of St. John was founded, in 1069 the women's monastery of St. Thomas. In 1102 King Koloman of Hungary was crowned King of Croatia in Biograd. In 1125 the Venetians destroyed the city. The time of the Venetian-Turkish wars left deep marks. Culture and sights

Biograd na Moru, view from the city harbor to the old town

The core of the old settlement is on a small peninsula. The city wall with round towers was preserved until the end of the 19th century. The remains of the cathedral , a three-aisled basilica , have been completely destroyed, the remains of the monastery church of St. John, another three-aisled basilica, have been explored and saved from decay. Only small remains of the St. Thomas Church have survived. Outside the old settlement, the ruins of a smaller single-nave church with apse and ancient Croatian graves were discovered. The parish church of St. Anastasia, built in 1761, has baroque altars, one of which has a gold setting. Outside the old settlement are the small churches of St. Rochus and St. Anton (1850). In the wider area there are prehistoric sites and remains of an ancient aqueduct . In the local history museum you can see an archaeological collection with prehistoric, ancient and old Croatian exhibits as well as the remains of shipments from the end of the 16th century.

The Kornati archipelago lies off the coast and the national park of the same name is only a few nautical miles away.
