Mislav (Croatia)

Mislav (also Mojslav , Mislauus , Muisclaus , Latin Muisclavus ) was a Slavic Knes and presumably ruled over the Duchy of Croatia , the so-called Dalmatian Croatia, from around 835 to 845 .

Life

Mislav was elected prince in 835. His predecessors were Borna and Vladislav . The principality of Primorska Hrvatska extended in the area of ​​the former Roman province of Dalmatia between the Velebit Mountains and the Cetina River .

At the beginning of his reign, Mislav was involved in armed conflicts with the Republic of Venice . In 839, under Doge Pietro Tradonico , Venice tried to plunder the Croatian coast. At the coastal fortress Sv. Martin ( St. Martin ) successfully defended the Croatian army under Mislav and forced a peace treaty with Venice.

Mislav moved his residence from Nin to Klis . During his reign the Church of St. George was built in Patulj .

The nearby Archdiocese of Salona under Archbishop Justin (860–876) always received a tenth of the income from agriculture and cattle breeding in his principality through Mislav's promise . It was the first foundation that a Croatian prince donated to the Archdiocese of Split, but it was also a political move for the coming epochs. The Archdiocese of Split was on the territory of the Byzantine Empire at this time and was under the Patriarchate of Constantinople . Since then, good contacts have been established between the Dalmatian cities and the following Croatian princes. Over time, the Dalmatian cities integrated themselves into the Croatian dominion and became part of Croatian Dalmatia.

Under Mislav, the Croatian navy , which was an important guarantee for the continued existence of the Principality of Primorska Hrvatska, strengthened .

His successor was Trpimir I in 845 .
