Zdeslav
Zdeslav ( Sedesclaus , Latin Sedesclavus ; † 879 ) was a South Slavic Knes and ruled over the Duchy of Croatia , the so-called Dalmatian Croatia , in 864 and from 878 until his death in 879 .
Life
Zdeslav was the son and successor of Trpimir I , the founder of the Trpimirović dynasty . After the death of his father in 864, Zdeslav was overthrown by the usurper Domagoj and, together with his brothers Petar and Muncimir, forced into exile in Constantinople .
After Domagoj's death, he returned to Croatia in 878 with the help of the Byzantine Empire and overthrew Domagoj's successor (probably Ilyko ). In return, he accepted Emperor Basil I's supremacy over Croatia.
In 879 he was overthrown and killed by Branimir , a relative (probably son) of Domagojs, and supported by John VIII .
