Romilly James Heald Jenkins (* 1907 in Hitchin , Hertfordshire , England ; † September 30, 1969 ) was a British Byzantinist and Neo-Graecist and Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College London .

Life

After studying Classics , Jenkins was a student at the British School at Athens from 1933 to 1936 , in 1933 as a senior student at the same time assistant director , from 1936 as a member of the Board of the Managing Committee ; In 1948 he was appointed trustee and from 1951 to 1958 he was Chairman of the Managing Committee . From 1936 to 1946 he was Lewis Gibson Lecturer in Modern Greek at Cambridge University , interrupted by his service in the British Foreign Service during World War II . From 1946 to 1960 he held the chair of Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College London and was also Honorary Lecturer in Classical Archeology . From 1960 until his death he was Professor of Byzantine History and Literature at Dumbarton Oaks .

Research priorities

Jenkins initially specialized in Classical Archeology of the Archaic Period, but then worked mainly on the history of the Byzantine Empire . With Gyula Moravcsik he edited Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos' work on the domestic and foreign policy of the empire. In the field of Neo- Greek studies he devoted an in-depth study to Dionysios Solomos as well as the murders at Dilessi (in 1870 three English aristocrats and an Italian nobleman were arrested by Greek robbers near Marathon in order to extort a ransom; the attempt at liberation ended for everyone Hostages as if deadly for the extortionists; the result was a serious diplomatic crisis).
