Roderick Beaton

Roderick Macleod Beaton (in Modern Greek transcription: Ρόντερικ Μπήτον) (born September 29, 1951 ) is a British Neo- Greekist and Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College London .

Life

After studying English literature and earning a PhD in Neo- Greek Studies in Cambridge , Beaton was first a Fellow in Modern Greek at the University of Birmingham , then Lecturer in Modern Greek Language and Literature at King's College London in 1981, and in 1988 he was appointed Koraes Professor there. As such, he was actively involved in founding the Center for Hellenic Studies at King's College. From October 2009 to September 2012 he will be relieved of his teaching duties and will take part in a Major Leverhulme Fellowship to work on a project entitled: Byron's War: The Greek Revolution and the English Romantic Imagination .

Honors

Beaton has won the Runciman Award three times : in 1995 for his introduction to modern Greek literature, in 2004 for the biography of Giorgos Seferis and in 2014 for his book on Lord Byron and his involvement in the Greek Revolution . In 2008 he received the Hellenic Foundation for Culture Translation Award for the translation of Seferis' Levant Journal . In 2019 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Honor by the President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos . He has been a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy since 2013 .

Research priorities

Beaton began his career with work on Greek folk poetry from the Byzantine era to modern times, for which he carried out field research in Greece and Cyprus, and the Byzantine novel up to the fall of Constantinople in 1453, which is characterized by her literary analysis of the Identify the object. With further work on Seferis and Kazantzakis , he has now established himself as one of the leading non-Greek experts in the field of modern Greek literature. Three of his books have now been translated into Greek.
