from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature is the representative of a professorship in the field of Byzantine and Neo- Greek Studies at King's College London , named after the Greek scholar and language reformer Adamantios Korais and of Byzantine and Modern Greek history, language and literature is dedicated. Together with that of the Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford, the chair represents the most important professorship in neo- Greek studies in Great Britain.

history

The Graecist and archaeologist Ronald Montagu Burrows , who established King's College as a center for Slavic and Southeast European studies, played a key role in establishing the professorship . However, the chair was initially financed by private funds from the Greek community in London and the Anglo-Hellenic League . However, this idealized the young Greek state that was involved in the Balkan wars at that time , and therefore rejected the views of the first professor Arnold J. Toynbee on Greek history. After a serious dispute with representatives of King's College over academic freedom, Toynbee gave up the professorship five years later.

The chair has been assigned to the Center for Hellenic Studies at King's College since 1989 , into which the Department of Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies was integrated from September 1, 2010 . First and interim director of the Center was David Ricks . He will be replaced on January 1, 2011 by Charlotte Roueché , who will lead the Center until the return of the current Koraes Professor, Roderick Beaton , from a three-year Leverhulme Fellowship on September 1, 2012.

Since September 2018, Gonda Van Steen has succeeded Roderick Beaton as the new Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature .
