Anglo-Hellenic League
The Anglo-Hellenic League is a Greco-British organization to support and promote Greco-British relations founded in 1913, in the aftermath of the Balkan Wars, by Ronald Montagu Burrows , Principal of King's College London , and William Pember Reeves , DJ Cassavetti and AC Ionides was founded. Originally intended to promote friendship, break down anti-Greek prejudices and support all kinds of connections, the emphasis today is on the cultural and philanthropic field.
The Anglo-Hellenic League, represented by John Gennadios , a co-founder and honorary president, was instrumental in creating and filling the chair of Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College London, as well as in the disputes which caused its first holder, Arnold J. Toynbee , to give up the chair in 1924 in favor of one at the London School of Economics and Political Science . The first president during this period (1913–1925) was William Pember Reeves.
In various emergency situations during the Second World War and in the decades afterwards, the Anglo-Hellenic Society also supported Greek people, groups and organizations financially.
Since 1986, its main activity has been the annual presentation of the Runciman Award , a prize for an English-language publication from the previous year on the subject of Greece or Hellenism abroad or some aspect of them. It is named after the historian Steven Runciman .
The Anglo-Hellenic League is housed in the Hellenic Center (16-18 Paddington Street, London). Prince Michael of Kent is their royal patron.
