Agit Kabayel (born September 23, 1992 in Leverkusen ) is a German professional boxer of Kurdish descent and current European heavyweight champion ( EBU ) .

Career

Agit Kabayel played soccer as a teenager before he came to boxing via kickboxing . He made his professional debut at the age of 18 on June 23, 2011 in Wuppertal . After nine wins in a row, he won the WBC Mediterranean championship against Gbenga Oluokun on March 22, 2014 in Tekirdağ, Turkey . After two early victories against the veterans Shalva Jomardashvili and Lawrence Tauasa, he beat the previously undefeated Christian Lewandowski by knockout and won the EBU's EU title.

On February 4, 2017, he defeated the Belgian Herve Hubeaux unanimously on points in Magdeburg and thus secured the EBU European heavyweight title. It was not until 2015 that another German boxer of Turkish descent, Erkan Teper, won the European heavyweight title.

On November 4, 2017, Kabayel defended his European title by a majority decision of the judges against Dereck Chisora . The twelve-round battle was held in Monte-Carlo . He won his second title defense on April 21, 2018 in Berlin-Neukölln against the Serb Miljan Rovčanin by knockout in the third round. His fight against Chisora ​​was voted EBU Fight of the Year 2017 in June 2018 .

He won his third EBU title defense on March 2, 2019 in Magdeburg against Andriy Rudenko from Ukraine. In September 2019 he became the first German to sign a promotion contract with the US broadcaster ESPN .

On July 18, 2020 he fought on points for the continental title of the WBA against the Greek Evgenios Lazaridis and remained unbeaten.
