Trpimir I ( Latin Trepimirus ; †  864 ) was a Slavic Knes and ruled over the Duchy of Croatia , the so-called Dalmatian Croatia , from 845 until his death in 864 . He was the founder of the Trpimirović dynasty , which ruled with interruptions until 1091 in medieval Croatia .

Life

In 845 he succeeded Prince Mislav . Although he recognized the formal sovereignty of the Franks , he used the ongoing Frankish- Byzantine conflict to largely withdraw his domain from the two great powers and to rule independently.

He also cleverly used the constant attacks of the Arabs , who weakened Byzantium and Venice , to strengthen his influence.
