Višeslav (Croatia)
Višeslav ( Latin Vuissasclavus , Visseslaus ; † around 803 ) was a Slavic Knes and ruled over the Duchy of Croatia , the so-called Dalmatian Croatia , from before 799 until his death around 803 .
Life
Višeslav led the Croatians of his principality in the war against the Franks . The Franks contributed to the decline of the already weakened Avar Empire on the Balkan Peninsula and incorporated part of it into their Avarmark . A local Croatian tribe was subjugated in the area of Pannonia . In order to extend their sphere of influence to the Dalmatian coast, the Franks decided to conquer the Dalmatian-Croatian principality . At that time, with the approval of the Roman Pope and the Byzantine Emperor , this was subordinate to the Croatian Prince Višeslav. Under Margrave Erich of Istria and Friuli , a Frankish army moved in 799 to the coastal town of Trsat near Rijeka in the Principality of Višeslavs . The Franks began to besiege the city, but without being able to take it. Margrave Erich fell during the fighting and his army retreated.
Death and aftermath
In 803 after the death of Višeslav, his son Borna followed him . His principality was finally subjugated by the Franks and incorporated into the Franconian Empire as a vassal state . Armed conflicts between the Franks and the Byzantine Empire followed for dominance over the Dalmatian-Croatian coastal region. In 812 the Franks and Byzantium signed a treaty in which Istria was assigned to the Franks and the cities of Zadar , Trogir , Split and the islands of Krk , Rab and Osor passed into the territory of Byzantium. The Croats between the Drava and parts of Dalmatia came under the rule of the Franks. The Croatian princes elected by the people were confirmed by the respective Frankish kings.
