Wallia

Wallia (also Vallia, Valia ; † 418 in Tolosa ) was from 415 to 418 king or rex of the warrior association of the Visigoths and the early Visigoths .

prehistory

At the beginning of the year 415 the visigotic leader Athaulf had led his association, which had been harassed by the Romans under the army master Flavius Constantius, to Spain , where he fell victim to a blood revenge in Barcino that same year . Athaulf had previously married the imperial daughter Galla Placidia and sought a rapprochement with the Romans, which his rival Constantius, however, thwarted.

Sigerich , who succeeded in seizing power with the help of influential men , briefly succeeded Athaulf . Sigerich pursued a policy of confrontation and began planning a campaign against Constantius. He also had several sons from Athaulf's first marriage sentenced to death. After only seven days of rule, Sigeric was overthrown.

Wallia succeeded Sigeric on the throne and tried to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa with his warriors in order to create a secure power base in Carthage. As under Alarich , this time the planned venture failed. Then the hungry Visigoths concluded in 416 a peace treaty with Constantius, where the Visigoths 600,000 modii were promised grain for transfer of Galla Placida , Athaulf widow who Constantius now married themselves, and the fight against warring with Constantius Vandals , Alans and Suebi in Spain.

In fulfillment of the treaty, Wallia sent Galla Placidia back to the Romans and first attacked the Silingian Vandals, which he almost exterminated. Only a small remnant remained and went under the protection of the Asdingian vandals. The Visigoths then turned against the Alans, who were also almost completely wiped out and joined the Asdingian vandals.

In 418 the Visigoths were recalled to Gaul , where they received instructions from Constantius to settle in Aquitania II and parts of the surrounding provinces of Novempopulana and Narbonensis . These visigotic foederati , the early Visigoths , were to be supplied from these areas from now on; In return, they were obliged to the Romans to achieve military success. Tolosa was chosen as the "capital". The settlement of the Visigoths seems to have been largely peaceful, the problem that the settlement areas assigned to the Visigoths were inhabited land with property relations, was perhaps solved by the fact that the division of property relations only affected the tax revenue of the lands, whereby two thirds went to the Visigoths and a third to the Roman civitates . However, the details of the regulation are highly controversial in research.

Wallia died unexpectedly in Tolosa in 418 while the establishment of the new residences was in full swing. Around forty years later, a grandson of Wallia, Ricimer , was to lead the fortunes of the Western Roman Empire as an army master .
