Rab (Latin: Arba , Italian: Arbe , German: Arbey - the name probably comes from the Illyrian word Arb meaning dark , green forested ) is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic . It belongs to the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar in the Kvarner Bay .

geography

The island is 22 kilometers long, has an area of 91 square kilometers and about 9500 inhabitants. Rab is one of the Kvarner islands in the Kvarner Bay . Neighboring islands are Krk , Pag , Cres and Dolin (uninhabited).

Rab has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and moderately warm summer months. In the winter months, the temperature rarely drops below zero. The peaks of Velebit are often covered with snow in winter.

Most of the soil is karstified . Three ridges stretch across the island, the largest of which is the Kamenjak. It separates the Lopar peninsula in the north with the village of the same name Lopar from the rest of the island. On a peninsula in the west is the Kalifront forest, one of the last oak forests in the Mediterranean. About 49 percent of the island's surface is covered by forests. Thus the island of Rab is one of the most forested islands in Croatia.

Rab has more than 300 springs, some of which are also used to supply drinking water.

history

The patron saint of the city and the island of Rab is Saint Christopher , whose skull is kept as a holy relic on the island of Rab. In his honor, the knight games, the Rabska Fjera , take place on the island every year on St. Christopher's Day (July 27th) .

According to legend, Marino , the stonemason of the island of Rab, founded San Marino , one of the oldest republics in Europe, in 301 .

In 1936, with the express permission of the local authorities, the then British King and later Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII, bathed naked in the sea with his lover and future wife Wallis Simpson .

During the time of Italian fascism , Italy operated the Kampor concentration camp on the island .

After the break-up of Yugoslavia, the island became part of the independent Croatia .
