history

The island is connected to the mainland by a bascule bridge in Tisno

The island has been inhabited for around 2,000 years. The remains of an Illyrian settlement that was once called Colentum have been found near Betina . According to documents, Murter was named "Villa Magna" (Big Village) in 1293. Evidence also indicates that there were two settlements on the island in the 13th century - Jezera and Veliko Selo, Srimač (now Murter). A record from 1318 lists the name Mortari for Murter. The places Betina and Tisno were mostly built in the 15th century at the time of the Ottoman conquests . Due to a significant influx of refugees from the mainland to the island, the island's population increased at that time.

heritage Site

  • Numerous finds of Christian texts in the Glagolitic script (instead of the Latin script ). These are now kept on the island and in the museums of the Vatican .
  • The Church of St. Michael , the Heiligenfels Chapel and the "Church of the Madonna of Gradina" are among the oldest churches on the island.
  • The traditional occupations of the islanders include fishing and agriculture : the island of Murter is known for excellent olive oil .
  • Nautical tourism is an important year-round industry. This generates a large part of the tourist influx.
