The island of Lošinj [ ˈlɔʃiɲ ] (German outdated: Lötzing , Latin: Apsorrus , Italian : Lussino) is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea .

Osor swing bridge

It is located in northern Croatia in the Kvarner Bay and is around 75 square kilometers in size. Its highest point is around 588  m. i. J. the Televrina . The archipelago Cres - Lošinj was called Apsyrtides in ancient times . These two islands are now separated by an artificially created canal (with a swing bridge ) near the village of Osor on Cres . Lošinj has 8,134 inhabitants. The island, rich in flowers and pines, is one of the sunniest places in Europe. The main town on the island is called Mali Lošinj (Little Lošinj). Veli Lošinj (Greater Lošinj), despite its name the smaller town, is a health resort. Other places are: Nerezine , Sv. Jakov and Ćunski .

About 2000 years ago, the Romans built a canal between the islands of Cres and Lošinj ( Osorski tijesnac , approx. 100 m long) to shorten the sea routes for smaller ships (previously Cres and Lošinj were considered to be just one island). Likewise, Lošinj has recently been divided into two by the Privlaka Canal . This is located at the Marina Lošinj , just before the town of Mali Lošinj. The larger, northern part of the island is called Mali Lošinj (Klein-Lötzing), the smaller, southern part is called Veli Lošinj (Groß-Lötzing). The towns of the same name Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj (the historical core of the island) are both located on the southern part, the island of Veli Lošinj. The island has an airfield for small aircraft.

The famous ancient statue of the so-called Croatian Apoxyomenos was found in front of Lošinj, and it has its own museum on the island of Lošinj.
