Schematic map |
Lastovo (Italian Lagosta , German, outdated, Augusta ) is an island south of Korčula in Croatia . The island is located in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County . Lastovo is 9 km long and 6 km wide and is mostly mountainous. The highest point on the island is Mount Hum, 417 meters high . Wine, olives and fruit are grown on the slopes of the island. The main places on the island are the ferry and natural harbor Ubli , the island capital Lastovo , Skrivena Luka (Portorus), Pasadur and Zaklopatica.
In 2006, the island of Lastovo, like the surrounding archipelago, was declared a Lastovo Nature Park .
history
The history of Lastovo as part of Dalmatia is closely connected to the history of Dalmatia . Before the year 1000 the island was considered a pirate refuge until Venice in 1000 conquered the island after a bitter battle. After the Peace of Campo Formio , the Kingdom of Dalmatia was established in 1797 in the Habsburg Monarchy . With the Peace of Pressburg , Dalmatia became part of France, but fell back to Austria after the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Towards the end of the First World War, Lagosta was hit by the 1918 armistice at Villa Giusti . In the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919, Dalmatia was assigned to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . However, Lastovo was assigned to the Kingdom of Italy in the Rapallo Border Treaty in 1920 . Lastovo was part of Yugoslavia since the Second World War .
In the former Yugoslavia under the Tito government, the island, like Vis, was not accessible to tourists for military reasons.
tourism
Lastovo is connected to the mainland from Dubrovnik via Šipan , ( Mljet ) and Korčula . The line is operated by G&V Line .
For sailors, Lastovo is an attractive stopover on the way between Split and Dubrovnik. Anchoring and mooring possibilities exist in the bays at the western end of the island (Veli Lago and Mali Lago) as well as in the ports of Ubli, Pasadur and Zaklopatica. There is a hotel, two campsites and numerous apartments on the island. The unobstructed view from the heights of the island to the south and the very low light pollution contribute to the fact that Lastovo also offers very advantageous conditions for amateur astronomers. Measurements show that the night sky over Lastovo is very dark and the visibility of the Milky Way from the island is very good.
A special attraction is the Lastovo Carnival, which has been documented since 1390.
