Vele Srakane [ sraˈkanɛ ] ( Italian Canidole Grande ; German Groß Kanidol ) is a small island in Croatia in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County . The island is located 2 km southeast of Unije in the Kvarner Bay of the Adriatic . Vele Srakane borders the smaller island of Male Srakane to the southeast , separated from each other by a narrow, approximately 70 m wide sea channel.

The narrow and elongated island, about 3 km in size, is characterized by a gently hilly character, the area is 1.15 km². The island consists of limestone, partly covered by sandy loam. Despite its small size, it has very different vegetation ( macchia , reeds or open grassland ) depending on the subsoil (lime or clay) and the exposed nature of the location . The highest point is the mountain Vela straža at 59 or 60 meters , on which there is a prehistoric fortress.
Settlement history and culture
On Vele Srakane there is a small settlement on the southwest coast that bears the same name as the island. The traces of the settlement go back to early history. In 2011 the island only had 3 residents who only live on the island in summer and spend the winter on the mainland.
In the southeast there is a dock for larger boats and thus a connection with ferries from Mali Lošinj . The inhabitants of the island live primarily from fishing and farming for their own needs.
