Michael Zissis Vassiliadis (born March 13, 1964 in Essen ) is chairman of the trade union IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie (IG BCE).

Life

Vassiliadis is the son of a German mother and a Greek father. From 1980 to 1983 he completed his apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant at Bayer AG in Dormagen and worked in this profession until 1986 after completing his apprenticeship.

In 1980 he became a member of the IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik (IG CPK) and has been a member of the SPD since 1981 . Since his membership in the IG CPK, Michael Vassiliadis has performed numerous honorary functions at local, state and federal level. He was a consultant in trade union education, chairman of the youth representative body and member of the youth representative body of Bayer AG, member of the advisory board and delegate to the trade union days.

1986 began his full-time union activity. Initially as secretary of the IG Chemie-Papier-Keramik in the Leverkusen administrative office, from 1990 in the district of North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1994 to 1997 managing director of the administrative office in Leverkusen. In 1997 Michael Vassiliadis became the executive secretary of the new trade union IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie (IG BCE) and headed the chairperson / personnel department at the headquarters in Hanover. From March 2004 to October 2009 he was a member of the executive board of IG BCE and was responsible for the areas of works councils, education, youth and shop stewards / local groups during this time.

In 2009, Vassiliadis was elected as the successor to Hubertus Schmoldt as chairman of the IG BCE. At the 6th Ordinary Trade Union Congress in Hanover on October 10, 2017, 20 years after the founding of IG Bergbau, Chemie, Energie, he was reaffirmed in his position with 97.7% of the delegate's votes. The son of a Greek guest worker has been the first person with a migration background to head a German trade union since he was elected chairman in 2009 . Since 2012 he has been President of IndustriAll Europe , the European umbrella organization for industrial unions in Europe. From June 2007 to October 2016 Michael Vassiliadis was a member of the German Government's Council for Sustainable Development . Since March 2011 he has been a member of the ethics committee for secure energy supply . Vassiliadis is President of the New Responsibility Foundation and Chairman of the Energy Transition Innovation Forum. Michael Vassiliadis is a member of the senate of acatech ( German Academy of Science and Engineering ), is a member of the executive committee of the BAPP (Bonn Academy for Research and Teaching of Practical Politics) and of the advisory board of the Initiativkreis Ruhr. He is also a member of the federal government's CSR forum and the board of trustees of the aid organization CARE Germany .

He is deputy chairman of the supervisory board of RAG AG and from 2003 to 2018 at K + S , as well as a member of the supervisory boards of Steag (Essen) and BASF ( Ludwigshafen ). He is the deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the RAG-Stiftung .

Michael Vassiliadis is divorced and has two sons. His partner is Yasmin Fahimi , a graduate chemist , former general secretary of the SPD, former state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor and a member of the Bundestag since 2017 .

Political positions

At the end of March 2017, Vassiliadis contradicted the SPD party chairman Martin Schulz with regard to the limitation of manager salaries. Compared to the dpa news agency , he described one of the central SPD election campaign topics for the 2017 federal election as absurd: "I consider the attempt to have the general meeting to vote on the remuneration of the management board as nonsense." Vassiliadis thus distanced himself as the first union chairman from the SPD , which calls for top management salaries to be capped.
