Sestrunj (Italian: Sestrugno) is an island in the archipelago off Zadar in Croatia .
location
The small island, about 15 km² in size, lies between the islands of Dugi Otok , Rivanj and Ugljan . There is a boat connection to Zadar. Sestrunj is also the name of the only village on the island.
history
The island was populated by Illyrians early on . Individual barrows can still be seen today. The island is one of the least populated in the Zadar archipelago. During the Second World War there was a considerable emigration. In 2001 there were 48 people on the island, most of them of retirement age. In 1953 the island had 196 inhabitants. Many then moved to Zadar to secure their livelihoods.
