Male Srakane [ sraˈkanɛ ] ( Italian Canidole Piccola ; German Klein Kanidol ) is a small island in Croatia in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County . The island is located 3 km west of Lošinj in the Kvarner Bay of the Adriatic . Male Srakane borders northwest on the somewhat larger island Vele Srakane , separated from each other by a narrow, approximately 70 m wide sea channel. The very small, uninhabited island of Šilo is located around 300 meters from the southeastern tip of Male Srakane .
geography
The island is characterized by a gently hilly character, the area is almost 60 hectares . Male Srakane is made of limestone, partially covered with sandy loam. Despite its small size, it has very different vegetation ( macchia , reeds or open grassland ) depending on the subsoil (lime or clay) and the exposed nature of the location .
Settlement history and culture
At Male Srakane there is a small settlement on the west coast that bears the same name as the island. The traces of the settlement go back to early history. In 2001 the island had only 2 inhabitants.
The inhabitants of the island live primarily from fishing and farming for their own needs.
