Kaprije (Italian: Capri di Dalmazia ) is an island in the archipelago off Šibenik in Croatia .

Location and inhabitants

Kaprije is an irregularly shaped Croatian island in the Kornati islands in front of the town of Šibenik . It lies between the uninhabited islands of Zmajan and Kakan . The main town of Kaprije is at the end of a long bay that is valued by sailors as being storm-proof. The residents earned their living by fishing, gardening and fruit growing (olives, figs, pomegranates, citrus fruits and mulberry trees). In order to defy the erosion caused by wind and weather, hundreds of kilometers of stone walls have been built up by hand over the centuries. The walls, which are up to 4 meters high and 3 meters wide, are still used today to enclose the property, sometimes as house walls. For a long time, the water supply was based on a rain basin, several 100 m² in size, which still exists today and is made of stone, with a traditional water filtering technique (stone filter - pebble filter). At the same time, until 2011, drinking water was brought to the island by ship, pumped to the houses and into cisterns. However, a modern water supply is installed today. The hamlet of Medoš in the northeast of the island is only occasionally inhabited by farmers. The island got its name from the Mediterranean plant caper , which grows on the island alongside other aromatic plants such as laurel and rosemary. The main village of the island, located on a slope, is also called Kaprije . From the highest point of the island (approx. 130 m above sea level) the mountain range of Velebit (up to 1700 m) and the foothills towards Zadar and Split can be seen in full length. From Šibenik, the district capital and episcopal city, ferries ( Jadrolinija ) run several times a day to the car-free island of Kaprije, 12 nautical miles away, and on to Žirje and back. A catamaran from the Catamaran Line shipping company also connects the island with the mainland. Kaprije offers tourists a number of restaurants, a small old town with typical Dalmatian stone houses and a 300-meter-long gravel beach.

history

Kaprije was first settled 400 years ago. Original houses and the old church are still preserved today.

On March 22, 1944, the warship Francesca da Rimini was anchored near the island because of an engine failure. It was built in Rijeka in 1942 for the Italian Navy. The length is 42 m, the width 12 m and has a total weight of 281 tons. It was confiscated by the German Navy in 1943. Their job was to transport weapons and ammunition to North Africa to the German troops under Rommel . Despite attempted camouflage, the ship was sighted and sunk by two British Spitfire bombers. Today the Francesca da Rimini lies at a depth of between 38 m and 50 m. Of the 3 masts that she once had, two are bent and the third is still 28 meters high today. The wreck is still very well preserved and is now a popular destination for divers. In the 1990s, much of the island's lush vegetation, including the old pine trees, burned up. The southwest side of the island still retains some of the population, including ancient plane trees.
