Ist ( Italian Isto ) is an island in the Adriatic Sea and part of the Croatian Zadar County .

location

The island is located north of the island of Molat and is surrounded by many other small and uninhabited islands. It can be reached from Zadar by ferry in just under three hours. There is a place of the same name on Ist, where most of the islanders live.

history

Ist was mentioned for the first time in 1311 , but still under the name Ost , in 1527 the island was mentioned under the name Isto (Italian). The name is derived from Illyrian , but its meaning is unknown. When the Croatians settled the island, they found Romans , from whom the names of many places on Ist are still derived: Funestrala , Klunda , Mavrela , Skrivadica and Turtula . From 1850 onwards there was a great emigration, which reached its peak between 1905 and 1910. The main destination of the emigrants was America.
